Texas house rejects a bill by Rep Harper barring teachers from teaching human evolution. The vote was 59 against and 50 in favor. After the decision, Harper held up a toy monkey amid smiles from fellow legislators.
The Texas House committee on constitutional amendments referred the highway bond issuance plan to a sub-committee amid protest from Beck and other proponents who urged floor consideration. The 9 to 6 vote followed committee chair Barnett naming Anderson Woodruff and Quinn to the sub-committee, with several amendments also sent to it.
United Press reports the American Railway Express Company becomes the Railway Express Agency Inc in a midnight transaction. About 100000 employees shift to 26000 tasks as the deal proceeds, described as the smoothest in big business history.
Saturday forecast for Amarillo and vicinity calls for fair and warmer conditions. West Texas will see fair skies and rising temperatures, except the southwestern portion. New Mexico expects fair weather and rising temperatures through Saturday. An above normal ice pressure over the icy mountain region extends into the eastern Rocky Mountain area and southern Plains. a low Pressure system over Hamilton Canada is bringing warmer northern and central Rocky Mountain weather. Temperature at Amarillo will reach 34 by 3 p.m. with yesterday’s high 42 and low 2 for 1928 reference.
A four-man bank robbery in Burkburnett ends with masked robbers fleeing toward Oklahoma after a female customer raises the alarm. Glenn Kincaid and bank examiner G. A. Gilbert were escorted to the vault when the woman cried out, prompting a pursuit by an airplane and patrol cars toward southern Oklahoma. Meanwhile Kansas City Star reports Arthur Hyde will become secretary of agriculture in the Hoover administration with one cabinet post still to be announced.
Southern readers welcomed the Texas Hoover special train as the Simmons University Cowboy band in full regalia paraded down Peanut Street and performed at the Roosevelt hotel in New Orleans.
Amarillo gears up for the Panhandle Livestock Association convention and a three day auto show on March 4 to 6. The event at 2068 Polk Street in the Ballew Satterfield showroom opens Monday at 9 AM, with free admission and many first time Southwest displays. Cattlemen plan daily sessions at the Mission theatre and auctions of 40 head of registered Shorthorns Tuesday and 100 baby beeves Wednesday. Free dances are set for each night at local hotels as Kansas City cattlemen reserve two Pullmans for Monday arrival.
Edwin Passehl was found guilty of assault with intent to kill jailer Marshall Nelson during a jail break attempt at Potter County Jail. He received a two year penitentiary term, having faced additional charges of burglary. Passehl, 24, had recently gained notoriety for a six day hunger strike while jailed.
Congressmen elect Augustus McCloskey, acquitted on one indictment, departed San Antonio for Washington to be sworn in as the Fourteenth district representative to succeed Harry Wurzbach. He faces four other indictments. District Attorney Seeligson said no action had been decided yet.
The joint Senate and House committee reports findings exonerating the highway department and the board of control of all charges raised by Representative Gerron. Gerron said the charges could not be substantiated and expressed confidence in the departments. the statement was filed with the lieutenant governor and speaker of the house.
An inmate escape attempt on Dallas County Jail death row prompted a search that uncovered several knives and scissors hidden under mattresses. The jail’s tier now holds 26 long term prisoners life termers and death row inmates awaiting execution.
Fred Horsbrugh 72 Amarillo rancher and cattleman died at Mineral Wells after over a month of illness. He managed the Spur ranch for years before moving to Amarillo in 1904 then ran cattle commission from the Amarillo hotel lobby. He is survived by his widow and three daughters and has siblings in Scotland.
Washington Maureh J. Garner of Texas was unanimously picked by House Democrats as their party leader for the next Congress and named to name an assistant whip on Monday. He will become minority leader as Republicans hold the majority to elect the speaker. Garner also retains ranking status on the Ways and Means Committee and stressed unity and conservatism in party duties.
West Texas figures including Jon Sneed and Will O'Brien unveiled a campaign at a Friday meeting in Amarillo to secure passage of the land bill over Governor Moody's veto. They will send a large delegation to Austin Monday to press lawmakers as ranchers and bankers rallied for the measure. The session highlighted cross county land disputes along the North Fork of Tod River and broader West Texas issues.
Governor Moody granted Oklahoma's requisition for J. J. Crane, held in Amarillo, as a fugitive from justice for failing to return to the penitentiary to serve a five year embezzlement sentence after a leave on Nov 10, 1928. Texan authorities sought Curtis C. York in Tulsa on forgery charges. Crane, inmate of Potter county jail, formerly led Crane Candy as local manager and was on parole from Oklahoma.
The body found Saturday at the Nomahegan golf links in Stanford New Jersey has been identified as Lena De Simone 30 of Richmond Hill. She is the niece of contractor John Mercogliano whose family was bound and robbed of jewelry and cash totaling 4000 during a February 20 home hold-up.
Jury deliberations stretched after a day and a half as veniremen weighed homicide and malice definitions. Judge Bishop said jurors could request an extra instruction but none was asked.
Afilio Herrera, about 35, detained in the killing of Mason Sheriff Allen T. Murray, was moved from Brady jail to an undisclosed location for safety. He was arrested on the Mason Brady highway after detectives found blood stains on his automobile and unexplained goods. Texas Ranger Captain Frank Hamer and a posse continued to search the hills for a second suspect.
Governor Moody rejected a small bill that would validate patents and awards on lands across navigable streams and abandoned beds. The attorney general deemed the measure unconstitutional, and supporters vow to seek a two thirds veto override.
Joe Regean was convicted of murder in Texarkana and sentenced to three years after a 24 hour jury deliberation. Rosaren was killed last October at Ey lau when he announced plans to remove lumber from Regean's house. Regean testified he shot Rosaren after an insult to his wife.
Sparks from a passing train set grass ablaze along the Fort Worth and Denver right of way and spread to a refuse oil pool at the Amarillo Refining Company. Flames rose about 200 feet but wind kept the blaze contained with no damage. Hundreds from Amarillo rushed to the scene fearing a refinery fire.
