Big Victories In City Runoff

In Amarillo mayoral and City Commissioner Place 3 runoff races, incumbent Mayor J. Ernest Stroud and Houston Dee Deford won decisive landslides. Thompson and W. S. Bill Mays were defeated, with Stroud carrying northern and eastern precincts while Deford drew support from similar areas. Total runoff vote reached 27,238, a new city election record.

California Quake Shakes Southern California Areas

A strong quake centered near the Salton Sea rattled the region from the Mexican border to Los Angeles. Caltech pegged it at magnitude 5.25 to 5.5, with minor rockslides on Highway 74 and no serious damage reported. Booth Removal At Amarillo Air Terminal Sparks Injury

At Amarillo Airport Monday night a National Car Rental booth was forcibly moved from the lobby. Annia Henderson and Maria Reeves remained seated on the booth as workers carried it to a waiting pickup. Henderson slipped and injured her ankle during the move. Durwood McCracken warned of a possible lawsuit if the booth were removed by force.

Bell Claims Speed Record For Rotorcraft Flight

Bell Helicopter Co of Fort Worth announced an unofficial world speed record of 316 mph for a high performance helicopter, achieved in level flight with the modified YH40 at the Bell facility under U S Army Aviation Laboratories contract.
