The Supreme Court agreed to hear whether draft boards can force college students into service for burning draft cards in Vietnam era protests. In Amarillo mayoral and City Commissioner Place 3 runoff races, incumbent Mayor J. Ernest Stroud and Houston Dee Deford won decisive landslides. Thompson and W. S. Bill Mays were defeated, with Stroud carrying northern and eastern precincts while Deford drew support from similar areas. Total runoff vote reached 27,238, a new city election record.

Annia Henderson and Maria Reeves remained seated on the booth as workers carried it to a waiting pickup. Henderson slipped and injured her ankle during the move. Durwood McCracken warned of a possible lawsuit if the booth were removed by force.
Bell Helicopter Co of Fort Worth announced an unofficial world speed record of 316 mph for a high performance helicopter, achieved in level flight with the modified YH40 at the Bell facility under U S Army Aviation Laboratories contract. Pilot Lou Hartwig led the run with co pilot Bill Quinlan, marking a joint Bell Army effort.
The Amarillo forecast reports fair weather and rising temperatures through tonight. Highs in the mid 70s, a low around the 40s, and southerly winds 10 to 18 mph.
The resignation of Charles de Gaulle sent the franc to five month lows while gold surged to a new peak. Georges Pompidou and Alain Poher emerged as leading candidates as France braces for presidential elections likely on June 1. Nixon expressed regret over the resignation.
Amarillo voters re elected Mayor J Ernest Stroud to a new two year term at City Hall Monday night. New Place 3 commissioner De ford won over incumbent W S Mays amid calls for unity. Stroud and Deford pledged good government and progress for Amarillo as Thompson and Mays offered congratulations.
The Nixon administration reduces the near Korea naval show and relies onSouth Korea based aircraft to defend intelligence flights. Task Force 71 ships are largely in port with eight near Korea. U S air units in South Korea gain F4 Phantom squadrons to escort missions and relieve local F100 units.
