Study claims 28 million American wives abused by husbands

Washington based UPI reports author Richard C. Levy estimates 28 million American wives suffer physical abuse by husbands. He cites seven surveys, noting extreme violence affecting 4.7 million and that police records miss many cases. Legislation in Congress seeks data collection and $60 million over three years to fund shelters and counseling for battered wives.

Jail Fire Kills 43 in Maury County

A foam padded cell fire at the Maury County jail in Columbia Tennessee killed 43 inmates Sunday during visiting hours. Authorities say a 16 year old fugitive from Wisconsin set the fire possibly with a cigarette. Many prisoners and visitors were overcome by toxic gas and smoke. 70 were hospitalized or treated. Autopsies and toxic agent tests will determine the cause beyond possible carbon monoxide.

FBI Agents and SWAT Resume Oklahoma Manhunt

A new force of FBI agents joined heavily armed SWAT teams as the search for Gene Leroy Hart, 33, a convicted rapist charged with three murders, resumed in the Ozark foothill woodlands near Locust Grove. Authorities say Hart may be holed up in rugged timberlands while tracking dogs and air patrols sweep the area. Hart’s mother speculates he could be elsewhere.

Barefoot Bandit Robs Restaurant in East Amarillo

Police hunted a barefoot bandit after he robbed a Kentucky Fried Chicken on Interstate 40 near Nelson in East Amarillo just after 11 p.m. The suspect wore a white pillowcase over his head, a denim jacket and jeans, stood about 5 foot 8 and weighed 145 pounds, and fled east from the scene armed with a small handgun.
