American steamer claims damage to German submarine

An American steamer arriving from a British port on June 4 fought a German submarine off an Atlantic port. The submanine fired torpedoes that failed to explode, was damaged by gunfire, and submerged with its periscope shot away. Nineteen shots were fired, blue smoke rose from the stern, and the captain kept watch for two hours but the submarine did not reappear.
