Blaze Diverted From Los Alamos Labs
Firefighters held a line on the north side of a 10 000 acre blaze near Los Alamos National Laboratory boosting hopes for containment by Tuesday. The fire, part of eight fires across the region, threatened the lab and a 17 000 population, with 1 000 firefighters working amid high heat and low humidity. One death was reported nearby as other fires burned in New Mexico and Arizona, prompting closures of National Forests.

Louisiana well shows potential geopressured gas and hot water finds
A government-backed team reentered an abandoned Louisiana gas well south of Lafayette and found significant natural gas and hot water in geopressured zones more than two miles underground. Initial two week tests at 12 900 feet yielded 200 000 to 1.5 million cubic feet of gas daily plus up to 10 300 barrels of water at 240 F, with high pressures.
