A simulated hydrogen bomb ground burst hit Houston at 1 45 pm during a Texas civil defense drill. Officials estimate 15000 dead or critically injured, with potential losses of 219000 killed and 170000 injured if not for early evacuations. Nederland and Beaumont districts also participated in test alerts and city evacuation.
William P. Kennedy president of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen plans to arrive in Amarillo by air at 1 48 a m Friday. He telegraphed plans to Brotherhood headquarters on the eve of the Texas State Association convention opening at 9 a m today at the Herring Hotel. About 500 guests expected for this 22nd annual gathering. Kennedy is a nationally prominent union leader and head of the organization.
Dallas June 15 Democratic National Chairman Paul Butler denounced a "controlled press" in Texas while addressing 1,200 Democrats at Fair Park. He urged the party to unite after admitting a rift, attacking coverage in the Dallas Morning News and clarifying his response to Gov. Shivers over a lunch invite.
Civil Aviation Administration officials urged the city to reexamine plans to deed Amarillo Air Terminal to the Air Force. They argued city title retention can achieve same results as outright ownership and supported a joint use agreement for post transfer operations. The city seeks runway expansion land and terms for a permanent Amarillo Air Force Base installation.
West Palm Beach Florida June 15 A famed circuit judge C E Chillingworth and his wife Marjorie vanished after a trail of blood led from their secluded Atlantic coast home to the water in Manalapan. Police and federal agents launched a massive search aided by the State Patrol Coast Guard and Air Force as officials urged quick FBI involvement.
R L Struble of Amarillo offers to purchase a 400 acre uranium lease after a local ore shipment. Lon Blansett of Standard Uranium Corp NM says negotiations are preliminary. Struble plans to form a corporation with L H Harper and Albuquerque executives as officers.
National League results show Cincinnati over Brooklyn 5 to 2 and St. Louis 7 over Pittsburgh 3. Philadelphia shutout Milwaukee 4–0 while New York defeated Chicago 7–2. American League tallies include Baltimore 6 Chicago 5 and Washington 7 Cleveland 0.
The Amarillo City Commission formed an airport board and announced its initial five members: Hugh V. Tull president of Plains Machinery Co. G. C. Jerry Rateliff vice president Amarillo Hardware. Floyde R. Garwood of Pampa Motor Freight Lines. Stanton Thatcher of 1st Supply Co.. and Joe Harlan attorney. Final terms and duties to be set after conferences. The board will supervise the airport, set the budget, approve purchases, negotiate with airlines for terminal space, manage terminal rentals, and direct commercial aviation development.
A late afternoon storm from the north with dust and rain struck Follett, Lipscomb County, causing thousands in damage but no injuries. Tornado activity damaged a granary, roof, windows, and porch in Follett. Shamrock reports hail up to golf ball size and a destroyed barn near Schultz ranch after a tunnel-like weather cell.
The Amarillo recruiting office urges men to join a 75 man Navy Gold en Spread Company with members from Amarillo Lubbock and nearby areas. Lubbock leads with 25 volunteers while Amarillo has about 15. Pampa has eight. They plan to depart June 28 for recruit training in San Diego and then attendees will proceed to Navy schools of their choice after boat training.
