London report says Flight Officer William James Daley 23 of Amarillo Texas, RAF American Eagle Squadron, awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. His citation notes keen officer with outstanding devotion to duty, having completed many sorties over Northern France Holland and Belgium since February and destroyed at least two enemy planes. Daley received his RAF commission last year and had been mentioned several times in air ministry bulletins.

Castro Suffers Heavily in Hailstorm

Castro County, Texas, suffered extensive damage after a Sunday night hailstorm cut a 10 mile wide swath west of Dimmitt. Losses were estimated around half a million dollars with many farmers uninsured. crops including wheat and cotton were destroyed and replanting is impossible in places.

Orrin J. Brown Executed in Hansford County History

Orrin J. Brown, 56, condemned for the hammer slaying of Mrs. Leota Murphy near Spearman, Hansford County, died in the electric chair at the state penitentiary. He was arrested in Chicago in 1941 after meeting the victim via a Denver marriage bureau and identified by a shoe name. Brown was convicted in 1941, appealed, and after a 30 day reprieve, was executed. he claimed another man was the killer. This marked Hansford County's first death penalty.

Sunk Lexington sailor to return home to Amarillo

One of the happiest couples in Amarillo last night were Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Lucas who live at 719 North Arthur Street. Their son Rugene Colgrove, a yeoman first class, was aboard the aircraft carrier Lexington when it was sunk in the Pacific. He expects to arrive in Amarillo tonight after more than two years in the navy. The Lucases had not heard from him since February.
