Tax Measure For Social Security Defeated In House

A band of representatives blocked S T R 12 and voted 91 to 56 against suspending rules to revive the constitutional resolution. The measure aimed to finance old age pensions and teacher retirement via sales and utility taxes. Leaders vowed further attempts Monday or Tuesday, needing two thirds to proceed.

Coronado Fete Receives $250000 Federal Backing

Legislation directing federal participation in the Coronado four hundredth anniversary celebration advances after favorable reports from Senate foreign relations and House foreign affairs committees. Death Record for L A McClellan in Spearman

Mrs L A McClellan aged 72 died in Hansford County after a long illness. She leaves a large family including five sons and five daughters with 31 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Union Church in Grover with local pastors officiating and burial in Gruver Cemetery.

Thompson Sees Return to Reason in Texas Speech

Col. E. Thompson of the State Railroad Commission told the Sheriffs Association of Texas convention that a return to reason in Texas will come from renewed citizen interest in public affairs. Dallas traffic officer W. T. Binford urged stricter driver license laws to remove dangerous motorists from highways.

Measure Goes to Governor Now

The Texas legislature approved the controversial fair trade act with amendments. The Senate passed it 20 to 11 and the House concurred 91 to 34. The bill lets manufacturers and merchants set minimum retail prices by contract for standard goods.

Directors and members of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association begin arriving for the quarterly regional meeting. Amarillo president Joe T. Sneed says over 200 visitors expected for a Saturday barbecue at the Kruser ranch and a country club dance. Discussions include the Argentine beef situation, range program for 1940, land vacancy bill, beef grading and advertising.

Land Dispute Settled With Immediate 28000 Acres Auction

Austin reports the Texas House passed a Senate bill for immediate sale of 28 000 acres on the Texas Oklahoma Panhandle boundary. Once signed, settlers may begin perfecting titles at once, lifting the land from earlier sale restrictions. The dispute involved Texas and Oklahoma with a 1930 Supreme Court ruling in Texas favor. the land spans Lipscomb Hemphill Wheeler Collingsworth and Childress Counties.

Soil Conservation Projects in Plains Move Forward

The Plains erosion programs led by H. H. Finnell aim to demonstrate soil conservation methods to farmers. Projects span five years across about 25 000 acres in Dalhart Channing He and Clayton and Mexico and Guy.
