MARINER 5 veered toward Venus as its sensors fixed on a bright light and a correction was attempted. Separate items note the Lib erty sinking into a Malta dry dock with 24 presumed dead, and global protests in Seoul against Park calling for elections.
Nationwide unrest continues as bands of Negroes roam eight Cincinnati districts looting and setting fires for a third night. Two shot, including a 15-year-old white boy in critical condition. at least 70 arrested and a dozen fires reported. Dayton also erupts after SNCC leader H. Rap Brown rally. Police and guardsmen on alert for 200 men en route to Cincinnati.
In Tampa over 120 Negro youths with white helmets patrolled five neighborhoods to deter trouble after warnings of strong police retaliation. The CYP, drawn from volunteers and students, urged calm as a knifing near the sheriff’s office sparked a crowd. Guards stood by following a house fire and the threat of renewed unrest.

Mariner, a 540 pound craft launched from Cape Kennedy at 2 01 a m EDT Wednesday, briefly lost Earth sighting and had to stop whirling to reorient toward Canopus. The mission follows a larger Soviet Venus craft lifting off days earlier as scientists aim to locate Canopus for calibration and data gathering.
In Geneva the Red Cross urged Egypt to open water pipes to Sinai after reports that thousands of Egyptian soldiers die of thirst in the desert. Egypt agreed but it was unclear if water reached scattered desert branches. Israelis had shut the pipeline during last week's war to deny water to Egyptians. Red Cross said Israeli troops were aiding distressed Egyptian soldiers. Returns from Sinai describe disarmament and refusals of food and water for the trek back to Cairo.
An Air Force B58 Hustler from Bunker Hill AFB Indiana crashed and burned about 6 30 p m Wednesday near Carrouzett Oklahoma. One crewman died when his parachute failed to open. two others survived. The aircraft reportedly began losing altitude from 28 000 feet after a routine mission and had just refueled with a tanker before the crash. Rescue crews found the pilot and a second survivor. the third crew member perished.
The United Nations Security Council defeated a Soviet resolution condemning Israel for aggression and demanding withdrawal from Arab territories seized in the war. The rejection clears the way for a General Assembly meeting, with Kosygin and other Kremlin leaders possible to attend. Secretary General Thant began polling UN members on a possible emergency session.
In War Zone D south of Saigon, U.S. 1st Infantry Division with artillery closed a ring around an estimated 2,000 Viet Cong guerrillas. The offensive, begun last Monday, has already killed over 260 guerrillas and wounded 11 Americans, with 60 killed in a prior one hour clash. The drive aims to trap the forces and risk to Saigon's security.
