An Arkansas couple and a Dumont woman died in a head on crash on Highway 82 eight miles west of Guthrie. Injured were Warren's son Joe Charles 19 Emily Louise 16 and Bachman children Melvin 9 Ronnie 7. Warren and wife from Portland Ark and Mrs Bachman from Star Route Dumont were in the two-vehicle wreck as Warren's sedan collided with Bachman's pickup.

At Fort Campbell Kentucky a 2.2 ton Army truck overturned on a curve, pinning paratroopers beneath. Fourteen soldiers died and nine were injured. The vehicle crossed a guard rail into Piney Fork creek, the 101st Airborne Division unit involved, with an H34 helicopter assisting in removal and transport to the base hospital. Eyewitness accounts describe the sudden stop and water-filled impact.
The Senate fought to trim a 3.637 billion foreign aid bill asserting waste and anti-American sentiment concerns. Sen. Smith backed the measure as a bill for peace and freedom while Morse and others criticized administration waste. Johnson and Knowland aimed to keep funding intact pending later adjustments. Kenedy Texas June 13 a drive in furniture company now exists by coincidence. R M Boone of San Antonio misjudged the gear position and drove into the display window of a downtown Kenedy furniture store. Boone earned the title trail blazer though his forest was finished furniture.
A tornado hit the southern outskirts of Damascus Arkansas causing extensive damage to a lumber mill and cutting power and telephone lines. No injuries were reported. Debris spread over a wide area and U.S. Highway 65 into Damascus was blocked for about an hour. A. C. Shofner, mill owner, saw the tornado near his home at about 7:05 p.m.
Galveston county gamblers strapped by a crackdown seek unemployment compensation as a grand jury convenes. Assistant Attorney General Cecil Rotsch and J L Smith led the first witnesses into a closed session. State actions include five new injunctions against gambling and vice, bringing total to 52 in 10 days, with targets including Boneta Club Kemah and Horseshoe Club Galveston.
Dr. Joseph M. Ray, named new president of Amarillo College, will arrive July 1 with his family. He currently heads education services for the U.S. Air Force and succeeds Dr. A. M. Meyer, resigning July 1 after 10 years. Ray, a Bowling Green Kentucky native, holds degrees from the University of Texas and has three children.
In 1957 Amarillo recorded sun on 138 of 164 days. At 3 p.m. Thursday wind and visibility readings varied with some stations noting clear skies in Amarillo while others showed limited visibility and scattered clouds in Dallas and Oklahoma City.
