A 36-year-old South American seaman suffered severe burns when a fire broke out in the engine room of a Colombian freighter off Baltimore on Friday. The incident was reported on page eight of the edition.
Boone McClure of Canyon museum recalls a time when Canadian River could be paddled and fish caught year round. The river widened with cottonwood cutting and bottom land plowing. Historic notes mention two explorers canoeing the Canadian in 1821. A big rubber raft race on the Rio Grande near Creede to South Fork is set for June 26, its sixth annual run. Amarillo’s South Amarillo Lions Club funds Texas Lions Camp visits, with a city carnival opening next Monday at Fleetwood Shopping Center. Taos marks a 350th anniversary this summer.
The Senate passed a foreign aid bill Friday after a forceful cut described as a meat ax by a Senate leader. The measure totals 3.44 billion dollars, with 12 dead and 450 homeless reported in the aftermath. Duane Pope, 22, a college graduate charged with robbing a Nebraska bank and killing three people, surrendered to police Friday after a telephoned plea from Sanford-Lake Recreation Area official Dr Desmond W. A 15 foot wall of water swept through Sanderson Texas flooding the town, with at least 12 missing and 20 injured. Fourteen bodies found, some from nearby graves. Hundreds evacuated, a typhoid vaccination drive underway, and a Red Cross disaster center opened as the town struggled to cope.
Premier Phan Huy Quat and the National Legislative Council announced resignations handing power to the armed forces. South Vietnamese troops and U.S. planes hunted a Viet Cong force after the district town of Dong Xuai suffered heavy casualties, with up to 19 American deaths reported.
