Senate votes to curb big power veto at UN

The Senate approved the Vandenberg resolution urging the United Nations to abolish the Security Council big power veto on peaceful disputes and on admitting new members. Super Dam To Tame Turbulent Columbia

Interior Secretary Krug approves a plan for a 740 foot high Hells Canyon Dam on the Snake River between Idaho and Oregon. The project would back a 4.4 million acre foot reservoir 93 miles long and generate about four billion kilowatt hours annually for power and irrigation support in the Columbia River basin.

Suspect Comes Out of Amarillo Woods Faces Federal Flight Charge

Louis B. Conley, longtime Amarillo resident and former photographer, was arrested at his mother’s home on Monroe by two Amarillo detectives and an FBI agent. Massachusetts authorities accuse him of kidnapping his daughter Lynette and assault, with federal charges of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. He will be arraigned before US Commissioner Mary K. Hardy and is held in Potter County jail.

Unofficial Population Signs Stir San Angelo Debate

In San Angelo Jaycee population signs at the city entrance read 44 950 while Amarillo authorities remove unofficial estimates. State officials call the Jaycee signs civic advertising, allowed in highway rights of way. Also noted is the death of Ed S Britton, 81, a veteran Texas Ranger.

Lad, 2, Injured By Passing Car On Polk Street

Robert James Weaver Jr age two, son of Mr and Mrs R J Weaver, was struck by a car on Polk Street about 9 45 PM while exiting his parents vehicle. He suffered facial and leg injuries and possible leg fracture at St Anthony's Hospital. Driver D B Aronholt of Washington DC was southbound and visiting Amarillo. Police say the child ran into the lane of traffic. Boxwell Brothers ambulance transported him.

Junior League opens summer playground program and events

Department Store Sales Rise 12 Percent in Texas

Dallas Federal Reserve district reports total department store sales up 12 percent for the four weeks ending June 5 versus a year earlier. Model Planes Compete In West Texas Contest

Model plane enthusiasts from a tri state area compete in Amarillo for the first annual West Texas Model Airplane Contest. Events start at 1 PM today at Thirty Fourth and Bowie and run to dark, with 10 AM Sunday flying until entrants finish. Prizes exceed 200 dollars. more than 100 entries received, including a 60 year old member.

Barefoot Burglary Suspect Leads San Antonio Police Chase

A 22 year old burglary suspect fled from a police station and led officers and reporters on a 30 minute chase through downtown San Antonio. He escaped by pushing a detective against a wall while taking a drink of water.

House approves bill to admit displaced persons to the United States

The House passed a measure to admit about 202,000 displaced persons and thousands of orphans from DP camps in Germany Italy and Austria over the next two years with limited restrictions. It also plans to admit up to 2,000 Czech refugees and several thousand unmarried minor orphans under nonquota visas. A Senate House conference will reconcile differences.

ODESSA June 11 A. S. Hostetter 63 years old is convicted of assault with intent to murder for firing seven shots at Francis Bell last July 12 in a cafe booth with Hostetter’s estranged wife. He slit his throat in court as the judge prepared to sentence him to 10 years. he died at a hospital.
