Washington June 11 AP report says the government ends sugar rationing for households hotels and restaurants at midnight ending five years of coupons. Industrial sugar rationing remains with records kept for industrial buyers and wholesalers. price controls continue.
The United States accuses the Soviet Union of violating the Yalta and Hungarian armistice agreements. Washington demands an urgent American British Russian investigation and warns of potential United Nations action. Bulgaria is blamed for arbitrarily arresting opposition leader Nicola Petkov, linking the Bulgarian move to Hungary’s crisis as a broader challenge to democracy in Soviet satellites.
The Library of Congress announced the acquisition of a 1754 Massachusetts pamphlet arguing against taxing alcohol. It claimed an excise levy would burden the poor on the frontiers and force them to drink unclean water. Separately, the House Armed Services Committee approved lowering voluntary enlistment age to 17.
Rep. Clarence L Brown announced the War Department has leased part of the Alabama Ordnance Works in Talladega County to Coosa River Newsprint Co for a 40 year term. The plant aims to start production in 12 to 18 months and produce about 100000 tons of newsprint annually.

A reliable informant said Russia negotiates a peace time alliance to align Hungarian and Russian forces. Training of top Hungarian officers at Moscow War College is reported with Maj. Gen. Laszlo Solyom among first attendees. Officials deny details while observers note Russian maneuvers in Transdanubia. The informant says a postwar pact would be nullified after treaty ratification. Hungary reportedly rejects U S civil aviation rights until sovereignty is restored.
The document records that over the next 40 years the Futile Housing Office will operate on revenues of 348,239,240 dollars from appropriations for power facilities.
The House trimmed five million dollars from the seven million two hundred thousand FPHA budget amid a finding that the agency failed miserably and that efforts to spur veterans housing were fruitless. The panel approved a 36 million ninety thousand dollar Government corporations bill and ordered the expeditor to close shop by month end. FPHA tenants were found to be over one third ineligible due to too high income for rent, and the panel urged adherence to the housing act slum-unit provisions.
A Senate House conference committee agreed to extend modified rent controls through February 29 with 15 percent increases allowed where landlord and tenant sign leases through 1948. The panel will review a final version before sending it to both chambers and the President. Senator Taylor urges a veto.
Buck, who headed the Senate conferees, said the committee agreed to remove most controls over building materials except amusement construction. The bill also provides for additional measures to follow.

A pilotless four engine Army transport plane completed a 2000 mile nonstop flight from Long Beach to Wilmington in eight hours and forty six minutes. Commanded by Capt. Thomas J. Wells the crew did not touch the controls. The new pushbutton automatic system fed flight data into a master panel to fly the craft.
Paul Porter former OPA chief and former FCC chairman will speak on his Greece trip during the Texas Press Association and Texas Newspaper Publishers Association annual dinner in the Herring Hotel June 20. Porter recently directed the Economic Mission to Athens and has entered private law practice in Washington. In Austin on June 11 officials urged improvements in schoolroom lighting to curb visual impairment in students. Fort Worth plans the Texas American Legion convention July 26-30.

A late day cloudburst drenched a wide swath from Memphis to Clarendon dumping two to three inches of rain and hailstones up to baseballs. Highways flooded and the Fort Worth and Denver Zephyr was halted at Memphis. Eyewitness E W Tadlock described hail between Hedley and Lelia Lake, car damage, and waters rising west of Clarendon as floodwaters subsided by 11.
In Ottawa on June 1, President Truman pledged U S aid to nations seeking peace and urged expanding world recovery efforts. He hinted at extending the Truman doctrine beyond Greece Turkey and called for completion of the St Lawrence waterway while stressing US unity with Canada in pursuing a peaceful, prosperous world. He said the United States must invest its energies and resources to help destitute nations regain self reliance.
An explosion aboard the aircraft carrier Valley Forge at the Philadelphia Navy Base injured nine to fifteen crew members. Casualties were taken to Philadelphia Naval Hospital. The blast is described as stemming from a steam valve.
