A four week truce in Palestine was accepted on Wednesday by Jewish and Arab leaders who said they agreed unconditionally. UN mediator Count Folke Bernadotte said the cease fire begins at midnight Friday Texas time and centers on Rhodes for conferences. The United States France and Belgium will oversee the talks at Lake Success New York.
Alvis Graves 43 of Lubbock died in a hospital after being shot in a yard gunfight in a crowded south Lubbock residential area. Police held a 25-year-old man who said he came to Graves home for a date with Graves’s daughter. Investigators continued the case and said charges would be filed.
Washington June 9 A sharp split among Republican leaders over foreign aid heated up as the party neared its national convention. Senator Vandenberg of Michigan denounced House cuts to European Recovery Program funds as a meat ax tactic aimed at reversing policy. Gov. Earl Warren and Harold Stassen sided with him, while Rep. Tabor led the opposition to increasing foreign spending above House levels. The dispute centers on cutting aid from 6.539 to 5.98 billion for 15 months, with Hoffman and Secretary Marshall to testify before the Senate Appropriations Committee.
Rising Star suffers a major blaze in the business district. Fire started at 2 15 p m in Higginbotham Mercantile Store warehouse and was tamed about 6 30 p m. Eight buildings burned, Cinderella Dress Shop and Love Shoe Shop among the losses. Masonic Hall damaged but spared. Firefighting aided by highway crew from Fort Worth hauling water from a nearby creek. Estimated damage placed at $500000.
A group of 43 Amarillo businessmen met yesterday at the Amarillo Hotel to advance the Amarillo Plan. They voted to form The Amarillo Industrial Plan Inc to attract new industries, provide sites or buildings on rental terms, and raise capital. Gene Klein outlined aims and Erwin Ochsner explained legal steps to incorporate. The group approved moving forward and elected directors.
Harvest crews in Panhandle and downstate Texas move through counties as harvest peaks. Childress County reports 40 percent complete with finish around June 5 and surplus combines. Cottle 50 percent. Hall 40 percent with finish around June 20. Weather remains hot and clear.
The Amarillo High School acapella choir plans a July trip from Amarillo to Washington and New York. Secretary Connelly is to relay the invitation to President on his return from a western trip, with Rep. Worley arranging a special audience in Washington on July 24 between 10 am and 5 pm.
A weather note for Amarillo and vicinity reports partly cloudy conditions with little temperature change Thursday, and Friday partly cloudy with scattered thundershowers and slightly warmer temperatures. West Texas expects cloudy skies Thursday and Friday with widely scattered thundershowers east of the Pecos River Thursday, ending in the Panhandle and South Plains Friday, and somewhat cooler readings in the Panhandle and South Plains Friday.

Stanford Arnold, 58, described as not too blind to court taverns, was ordered by Judge Frank M. Padden to pay 31,500 in back child support to his third wife Adrienne and continue support for his daughter. Attorney Edward Sternberg argued Arnold is blind from an eye ailment and cannot work. Also reported, Rabbi Joshua Loth Liebman, 41, author of Mind, died at his Boston home after a grippe illness and heart attack.
The Senate rejected amendments to create a race based draftee segregation system and a universal military training plan. One proposed amendment would allow enlisted men to sit on courts, and the measure sought to remove the court's independence from commanding officers. The segregation proposal from Southern lawmakers failed to gain support.
The Senate considered universal military training separate from the draft with a six month youth program proposal by Senator Malone. A Kem amendment to lighten court martial punishments and allow counsel pretrial was approved 44 to 39, while provisions on unit segregation faced partisan in-fighting and late opposition.
At courthouse in Raton New Mexico and Perryton and Frutch areas, veterans are invited to attend advisory sessions at 5 PM local time. Organizers include Northern New Mexico Game Protective Association and Red Cross affiliates. Community groups list names and roles, with dates and locations for welfare and information sharing.
The Red Cross reports 120 people in 64 Vanport families are missing nine days after the Columbia flood. Four bodies have been recovered. 31 are confirmed dead in the flood zone. Maurice Reddy said 335 are unaccounted for nine days after Memorial Day disaster as relief work continues.
Moscow reports that Russia trims reparations from Finland Hungary Romania as part of aiding friendly nations. Pravda and Tzvestia note a rise in the Soviet economy allowing bigger help, with 55 percent cuts in Romania and 50 percent cuts in Finland and Hungary under discussion.

Detroit June 9. George Addes former UAW-CIO secretary treasurer has filed for unemployment compensation with the Michigan Unemployment Compensation Commission. Addes 37 held the post from 1936 until his defeat at the convention last November in the right wing sweep of Walter Reuther. His salary was 7500 a year. If approved he may receive 20 dollars weekly for 120 weeks. He was unavailable for comment.
