The New Mexico Supreme Court in Santa Fe took under advisement Tuesday an appeal of the criminal contempt conviction of political columnist Will Harrison. The report notes related items on pages 1 and 4 including a bridge tournament in Santa Fe and Viet Nam news.
The Soviet Union launched an unmanned lunar probe toward the moon hoping for a soft landing and enhanced surface photographs. If successful, Luna 6 could outpace the United States, aid site selection for manned flights, and test landing techniques with instruments transmitting data back. Tass reported all onboard instruments were functioning normally.
President Johnson directs the VA to keep five hospitals and eight regional offices open while carrying out the planned closures of six hospitals and two veterans homes. VA Administrator William J. Driver announced the directive implementing the committee report amid House veto efforts.
The State Department said American forces in South Vietnam may take a broader combat role if requested by South Vietnamese commanders and if U.S. troops operate with South Vietnamese units. Previously Marines and paratroopers mainly patrolled bases and engaged Viet Cong when needed. General Westmoreland would commit troops only with Vietnamese requests and joint operation.
The abandoned 1939 convertible of Duane Pope was found Tuesday in Wichita Kansas. Pope, 22, a former McPherson College captain, faces state first degree murder charges and a federal bank robbery count in the Farmers State Bank killings in Big Spring Nebraska. Franklin Kjeldgaard survived and identified Pope from a photo.
The Dow fell 13.10 to 889.05 as concerns over U S troop use in Vietnam weighed on blue chips. Rails and the S and P declined, with Chrysler active at 46 and Diebold trading around 32, amid 4.66 million shares changing hands and 938 stocks down.
Astronauts James A McDivitt and Edward H White II returned to Mayport Florida after four days in space with one nosebleed for McDivitt attributed to drying oxygen. They received widespread honors including a Chicago ticker tape parade, University of Michigan festivities, and homecomings in Jackson Michigan and San Antonio Texas with invitations from New York Newark and Miami.
Air Force investigators told Senator John Stennis that a defective bomb fuse may have caused the Bien Hoa base disaster in Vietnam on May 15 16. Lt Gen William K Martin presented findings in a closed session, with officials suspending use of the fuses pending further tests in the U.S. and Vietnam.
AP report from Lubbock states two men Walter Connell 23 and Joel Searcy 22 were found dead in a parked car with a hose attached to the exhaust and running into the vehicle. A note was found at the scene.
Reports describe funnel sightings near Umbarger and San ford while a major hail line moved across Canyon and Amarillo. Hail sizes ranged from peas to golf balls with some baseballs and window damage reported in Randall County and Rolling Hills areas.
