Storms Sweep Across Region Trigger Tank Fire
A line of thunderstorms from Hobbs New Mexico to near Dalhart produced rain hail and dust and caused a large oil storage tank fire seven miles south of Sunray. Lightning ignited the Continental Carbon Co. tank around 8 p.m. It burned nearly two hours before firefighters let it burn out as winds from the northeast kept other buildings safe.

The Weather Bureau reports Amarillo saw two hours of rain totaling 0.15 inches between 8 and 10 p.m. Heavy rains, hail, and dust hit surrounding areas with Hereford recording 0.16 inches and Canyon 0.30 inches. Storms began after 7 p.m. in western Panhandle and eastern New Mexico and moved southeast with gusty winds and scattered showers across Tucumcari Portales Clovis and other towns.
