An early morning earthquake in Mexico City killed 63 people and injured 70, with extensive property losses. Soldiers were among the dead trapped by collapsing barracks and the city power plant suffered six fatalities. Rescue teams search ruins as the death toll is expected to rise.
General Francisco I. Madero Jr arrived in Mexico City to roaring cheers from thousands lining the enclosure in front of the railroad station. Bouquets were laid along the coach route as he and his wife were driven to the palace amid a grand military pageant. He addressed a vast crowd, spoke of harmony with provisional president De La Barra, and appeared moved by the reception.

Dallas reports a hot dry spell endangering crops beyond cotton in Northeast Texas. Corn faces the greatest damage with some fields near total loss in Denton County unless rain arrives soon. Stock water remains sufficient in most areas, but shortages appear at a few locations.
Washington June 7 The senate finance committee concluded four hours of executive session on the Canadian reciprocity bill. Chairman Penrose declared the amendments adopted by the committee would be killed on the senate floor. No votes were taken that day on the measure or the amendments.
Tooele Utah June 7 cashier S I L Schaefer of the Tooele Commercial Bank bound and gagged by two robbers who escaped on horses with 29000 dollars. Posses are in pursuit. He was alone and the robbery not discovered for an hour.

Two cases of pellagra are reported at Odell in Wilbarger County Texas. An aged man and his daughter are the patients and the disease is far advanced.
Vernon Texas June 7 Captain Shem E H Hatchett who served through the Civil War under General Cabell died here today aged 64 He was tax collector of Wilbarger county and a prominent Mason.
In Washington on June 7 Democratic Leader Underwood denounced the tariff board over non disclosure amid wool tariff debates. He charged the American Woolen Company influenced Republican policy and warned the board may withhold facts or have wasted a quarter million dollars.
Rev. J. Sam Barcus was elected president of Seth Ward College by the Board of Trustees in Plainview Texas. He will move to Plainview to lead the college after transfers to the Northwest Texas Conference. he has held top church positions including president of Clarendon College and professor at Southwestern University. The drive last Sunday raised 1000 for the school, and plans call for campus improvements including a park and ten acres of development to beautify the South Plains institution.
Ground is being cleared in Lubbock Texas for the First National Bank of this place to begin a brick two story building. The first floor will house the bank a drug store and a barbershop with another business yet undisclosed. The second story will be divided into office rooms.
At the University of South Carolina in Columbia on June 7 many students received diplomas and degrees during the annual commencement. Lewis W. Parker of Greenville delivered the commencement address to the graduating class.
Waco Texas will host the Texas Firemen association meeting from June 20 for three days at the Majestic theater. The local committee has arranged a public program with races and a water display on the plaza. President W. T. Hunt of Dublin and secretary J. F. Sehmiits of Dallas lead the state organization.

W E D Stokes owner of the Hotel Ansonia on upper Broadway was shot three times. Police say Ethel Conrad and Lillian Graham, both involved, with a revolver reportedly used in the attack. Stokes was wounded in the thigh and leg, serious but not believed dangerous, as he and his lawyer say the visit stemmed from demands related to letters he wrote.

Dr Frederick Wines of Illinois calls for replacing county jails with state owned prisons to end graft and inefficiency. He says jails are schools for crime and cites political manipulation, urging centralized control and abolition of county prisons to reform crime supervision nationwide.
