The Supreme Court, in three unanimous decisions, voided segregation at two states universities and on railroads, demanding truly equal facilities. It did not overturn the 54 year old separate but equal doctrine, but pressed states to admit Heman Sweatt to the white University of Texas law school. Oklahoma also must end segregation.
AUSTIN June 5 AP Texas officials reacted after the Supreme Court ruled against the state in the tidelands case. Atty. Gen. Price Daniel vowed to continue the fight and seek rehearing to develop all evidence. Gov. Shivers described a divided court and pledged to oppose any Congress effort to take tidelands, while the Texas Property Defense Association voiced confidence in victory and state control of tidelands. The report notes other Supreme Court actions and a push for segregation issues across other cases.

Washington June 5 Special action on legislation authorizing construction of the proposed 85 million dollar Canadian River dam was delayed for at least a week as the Senate Interior and Insular Affairs Committee failed to act. The committee next meets Monday. The bill passed the House last year and was approved by a Senate subcommittee weeks ago. The Budget Bureau report is expected later this week. Senator Ernest McFarland was out of the city and expected back soon.

A non scheduled C 46 plane carrying 65 migratory workers from San Juan Puerto Rico to New Jersey disappeared into the Atlantic about 330 miles northeast of Miami after losing an engine. A life raft was later sighted but it was unclear if anyone was aboard. Coast Guard search planes and ships, including a B 17 bomber from Bermuda and the cutter Aurora, were dispatched to the scene. Pilot Joseph Halsey reported a mixed crew of men and women aboard before contact was lost. A similar crash a year ago near San Juan claimed 53 lives.
Pampa attorney Aaron Sturgeon, 47, filed today for Gray County Democratic chairman. He describes himself as a staunch states rights Democrat and says he never sought public office before. Incumbent John Andrews will not seek re election, and Dee Dodson notes Sturgeon is the first to file for the post.
