Hollywood reports that on the Irish Sweep Stakes the United States yards ahead with 2,745,000 dollars while Europe and the rest of the world trail with 2,966,000 dollars. The writer notes Roosevelt’s fairness push and questions the legality of the scheme.
The Potter County Relief Board asked the Texas Relief Commission for special relief to drought hit counties. Due to statewide relief cuts Panhandle funds will be about 40 percent lower in June than May. Board chair A. E. Meyer noted little farm labor demand this year will limit relief needs. Special to The News reports Clovis New Mexico celebrates the 28th anniversary of its founding with a Pioneer day. An estimated crowd of 15000 plus attended the event. Pioneers from the 1880s and 1890s from Eastern New Mexico West Texas and neighboring states gathered to renew acquaintances. About 4000 pioneers registered in the county before statehood in 1912. Many attendees had been in the region as early as 1907.
Six students under observation at a Sherman hospital after a college prank at Austin College led to two deaths from wood alcohol. Durwood Newman and James Garrett, both 19 and 20 from Athens, died after consuming the substance. thirteen others sought medical attention.
German general Alexander Von Linsingen, head of the southern army in World War I and later Berlin garrison commander during 1918 regime change, is reported dead in Hanover. He is listed as age five, with no further details available.
