Fire destroyed the four story Amarillo Athletic Club at 205 207 Polk Street as wind hindered crews. Top floor blaze started around 8:30 pm with undetermined cause. roof collapsed by 9:30 pm. WPA sewing rooms and NYA toy shop on upper floors suffered total losses. 350 women and 11 men affected.
Norther from Colorado/Kansas-Nebraska region sent clouds of dust across the Panhandle last night obscuring sun and delaying travel. Rain followed in towns like Stratford and Texline-Channing, with snow reported on the Rockies. Texas Panhandle roads reopened with limited closures and ongoing flood conditions on Pecos River routes.
Washington June 4 Congress and Senate members from 10 Great Plains states unanimously adopted a program from the Panhandle Water Conservation Association. Notables pledged aid include Senators Connally Thomas Capper Murray and Representatives Jones Ferguson Martin Hope Carlson Jed Johnson Hill Massengale. Rowe with a belt carried gun but pleaded not guilty to first degree murder He waived a preliminary hearing and was held without bail for the federal grand jury Rowe was killed at a ranch house near Gallup after Osborne and Kelsey Presley Gallup police chief arrested him on auto theft and jail escape charges
The Panhandle Geological Society barbecue scheduled for today at Jack Hall's ranch has been postponed until a future date due to the rains. Announcement came yesterday afternoon from Go. K. Knight president after a conference with the entertainment committee.
