Southern Governors Press Rail Rate Parity in Washington

In Washington Southern governors urged the Interstate Commerce Commission to uphold Lee’s finding that national freight rates discriminated against the South. Edgar Watkins argued that coercive, monopolistic rates and mergers harmed southern carriers, while asserting parity with the Northeast and disputing higher Southern service costs.

Rival crow’s nest found near Turkey

In Turkey Texas an object described as a rival to the famous Dallam County dust bowl crow’s nest was found by Curtis Tunnell. The nest, built of baling wire barbed wire and bucket briars? was 20 inches in diameter and lined with grass. Tunnell cut the branches and brought it to town for exhibition.

Broken Gas Line Found at School Blast Mystery

In Barberton Ohio investigators found a broken 1 1/2 inch gas main outside the wrecked school building where a blast injured 53 children and four adults. Fire Chief Claud Witwer said the break lay nine feet outside the basement and fumes filled the area. Officials note the gas meter inside had been off for two months. Of 57 injured, two children and a janitor received care with a fair chance to survive.

Barrymore Condition Described as Much Improved

Chicago reports John Barrymore, 57, in much improved condition after a restful night. The actor had been ordered to rest yesterday following an attack of a heart ailment.

Autopsy Planned After Texas Girl's Death

Dr. F E Toomey of San Diego completed an autopsy on Martha Wilma Anderson to check for illegal operation, noting uterine hemorrhage. William Mahedy and Toomey took William H Bouldin to California to face murder charges, exhumation occurred at Waelder Texas with about 200 onlookers.

Thetis submarine located by marker buoy offshore Liverpool

The British press report Cammell Laird offices saying the missing submarine Thetis with 79 men aboard has been located. An emergency marker buoy was found about 25 miles west of Liverpool, though no position was given, and officials cautioned that no confirmed news had arrived.

Weary Wandering Jews Ordered To Leave Cuba

In Havana on June 1 the German liner St Louis faced a Cuban order to depart with 917 Jewish refugees or be towed out. President Bru’s decree demanded immediate departure within the day, while customs chief Varona cited fuel and provisioning delays for the voyage back to Germany. The ship remained in port with marines on standby as refugees, including 600 women and 150 children, suffered intense fear and despair amid security watches and a reported suicide attempt.

State to Open Bids on 20 Road Improvement Projects

Panhandle Sees Wide Rainfall With Severe Storm Near Canyon

Thunderstorms drenched the Panhandle last night with heavy showers and hail near Canyon where 4 to 5 inches reportedly fell and a farm building was blown down. Other areas from Clarendon to Waynoka received quarter to half inches as rainfall totals and May’s rainfall were analyzed by the U S Weather Bureau in a May meteorological summary.

U S Protest Over Bombing of Mission in Honan

The United States consulate protested to Japanese authorities after bombs damaged the American Baptist Mission at Chengchow in Honan on May 26. A wall in the mission courtyard was destroyed. the mission had already suffered four prior raids.

In Austin on June 1 the Texas House defeated the Panhandle gas proration bill 83 to 37 after three days of debate. Supporters led by G. H. Little and Eugene Worley argued proration would aid operators while opponents warned it would drain markets and hurt Panhandle producers.
