First swimming victim of the season at Hall ranch lake

Vera McRae fourteen year old daughter of Leona McRae of Harrison street drowned at Hall ranch lake west of town while swimming with friends. She stepped into a deep hole and disappeared under water after a brief accidental entry. Resuscitation failed. Survived by mother and brothers Raymond Roland Curtis. Body at Well Funeral Home awaiting funeral plans.

Carpenter Granted New Trial In Booze Case

East Amarillo carpenter H. H. Chamberlain was granted a new trial after a judge cited insufficiency of the search warrant in the liquor equipment possession case. The earlier indictment motion was overruled, and deputies faced baffling secret passages during the raid on his home.

Oklahoma miners strike over wage cuts at Tahona mine

About 125 miners walked out and struck in Panama Oklahoma after operators at the Superior mine near Tahona planned wage reductions for entry men. The walkout followed yesterday’s action by miners.

Explosion Kills One at Elkton Fireworks Plant

In Elkton Maryland a blast in a fireworks plant mixing room killed truck driver Harry Brown and left three others Allen Dickerson Vernice Jones and John Gilbert fatally burned. Dozens of workers including twelve girls were injured by flying glass as the fire was quickly controlled.

Wellington Man Found Not Guilty of Oatman Murder

Kich Fulcher was acquitted of murdering Roy Oatman after a Wellington district court trial. The February 20 altercation at a country dance led to the verdict of not guilty after a 12 hour jury deliberation. Fulcher, 23 and unmarried, faced defense attorneys R. H. Templeton and R. H. Cocke. Oatman, 30, left a wife, three children and other relatives.

Western Air Express expands routes linking Los Angeles and Kansas City

Western Air Express marks its third year by adding 1550 miles to routes now totaling 226? miles with a Los Angeles to Kansas City line inaugurated today using 12 Fokker tri-motors. The LA to Albuquerque leg opened two weeks ago and extended to Amarillo last week. Kingman, Arizona serves as refueling stop. The 14 passenger planes cruise at 120 mph with 150 mph top speed, offering a scenic Pacific Southwest air corridor over mountains and deserts.

Two Car Crash Injures Overstreet in Amarillo

J O Overstreet, 413 Houston street, sustained minor right shoulder injuries when his Ford coupe collided with a bus at Eighth avenue and Taylor street. The bus then struck Frank Gamblin’s Dodge as it tried to avoid the wreck. Overstreet's car remained operable after the crash and he was taken to Northwest Texas hospital with non serious injuries.

All But Four Tickets Sold on Trade Trip

Committees from the Jobbers and Manufacturers Association press on to secure a special train for a three day trade trip across North Plains Western Oklahoma and the Central Panhandle next week. Floyd Jones 45 is named as club representative and Kiwanis also plans a representative. Amarillo high school band will join a 40 piece party traveling 500 miles to 20 Texas and Oklahoma towns. Train leaves Amarillo Monday at 10 30 pm for Spearman to begin Tuesday. Cost is 50 dollars and covers all but meals with reservations via the Board of City Development or E. EB.

Lindbergh Joins Social Register In Next Edition

The Evening Post reports Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh will be listed in the summer social register next month beside Miss Morrow and Anne Spencer Dwight W. Lindbergh will appear after the marriage entry in Englewood New Jersey on May 27. The social register continues listing spouses of already listed members at its discretion.

Dallas Dead Man Found Linked to Active Beer Joint

Deputies going to a Dallas house to find a dead man discovered a fully stocked beer operation with 5,000 bottles and a well equipped beer joint. Neighbors reported strong odors prompting the search and the discovery.

El Paso Lawyers Slain By Spaniard In Office Incident

Two prominent El Paso lawyers H F D Oppenheimer and Frank Lyons were shot dead in their office. Jose Marin, a Spaniard mine owner who had sued them for 100000, walked across the hall and urged the clerk to call the sheriff. A bystander recounted Marin calmly leaving with a pistol and instructing to call law enforcement.

Labor gains defy Conservative bid in British vote

The Labor party neared a majority in the House of Commons with about 288 seats from 8,506,224 votes, while the Conservative tally reached 250 seats from 292,204 votes. A 308-seat majority is required in a 615-member chamber. Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin’s government trailed as results neared completion.

Man shoots neighbors during quarrel then barricades home

Fred Preuss on Chicago's North Side killed three people including Sergeant John Connelly and Detective Harry Hagberg after a domestic dispute. Wounded included Detective Joseph Murphy and others. Police used tear bombs and machine guns to storm the home. Preuss, an expert shot, barricaded himself as neighbors reported heavy drinking for three weeks.

Legion Meet Opens Today For Panhandle Delegates

Today begins a two day Eighteenth district American Legion convention in the city with delegates from 26 Panhandle counties. About 200 out of town attendees are expected as registration opens at 1 PM at the Legion home in the municipal auditorium. J W Sebastian of the Veterans' bureau will be on hand for compensation claims and service officers' school. A 40 and 8 dance is planned for tonight. A memorial service by Dr L N Stuckey at 11 AM Sunday follows.

99 Year Sentence For Step Mother Death

Loyd Davidson, 82, faced a 99 year sentence for the death of his step-mother Ellen Davidson whose charred body was found with her husband W. T. Davidson in a burned farm home near Coolidge. The verdict was returned tonight and Davidson will be tried later on a murder charge in his father’s death.

Panhandle police hunt unnamed attacker after alleged assault

Panhandle authorities comb panhandle counties for an unnamed man accused of attempting to attack a 16 year old Amarillo schoolgirl in her north side home yesterday noon. The girl resisted and cried during the struggle before the man fled. police hoped to arrest him soon.

Mexican Church Row Eases Toward Settlement

Early negotiations for settling differences between the Mexican government and the Roman Catholic church began after Archbishop Ruiz said he had been appointed apostolic vicar in Mexico by the Holy See. President Portes Gil invited negotiations and plans a possible meeting with Ruiz. Ruiz seeks a passport and may travel to Mexico City within two weeks.
