The Very Rev. Msgr Archibald Monroe Bottoms, chancellor of the Amarillo diocese, pleaded guilty to stealing a 1964 Chrysler Imperial from Bowen Motor Co and selling it to the Albuquerque auction for 3500 dollars. He was placed on two years probation and restitution was paid. Police tied the car theft to a pattern of car trading by Bottoms, who claimed proceeds funded St. Francis Church.
Rails led a vigorous stock market rally Friday with gains across steels chemicals utilities electrical equipment farm implements rubbers and mail order retailers. Illinois Central rose $2 to 50.37 New York Central gained $1.37 to 52.25 and Southern Railway advanced $1.37 to 55.62.
Paris designer Michel Tellin claims to have assembled the world’s most expensive gown valued at $2 million. Actress Gina Lollobrigida will wear the jewel encrusted floor length dress in the film Hotel Paradise with Sir Alec Guinness. the gown features diamonds, emeralds, conical sleeves, and a gem laden collar.
Walter Daniel Hendrickson 36 of New York City pleaded guilty in Amarillo to threatening President Johnson and to Dyer Act violation. Judge Dooley sentenced him to three years for the threat and two years for the Dyer Act, to run consecutively, totaling five years. Indictments from New Mexico and New York were transferred. Hendrickson, an ex convict, was arrested July 9 in a motel on E Amarillo Blvd after a nationwide manhunt. He allegedly mailed a letter to the White House April 15 claiming he would do a better job than Oswald and escape. He also faced charges for stealing a 1965 Chrysler and using aliases. The case includes an Idaho rental car and multiple identities.
Dallas dentist positively identifies Shirley Ann Stark as one of two bodies found in a weed-grown north Austin vacant lot. Officials pursue autopsy to determine cause of death with no outward signs of violence evident. speculation hints at possible strangulation.
In Dallas a crowd of about 700 Negroes taunted police as officers cleared a path to aid a baby from a burning building. The 23 month old Patrick Chambers died on arrival. smoke inhalation was ruled the cause. Three people, including a woman, were arrested.
Army Sgt. Robert Lee Johnson and James Allen Mintkenbaugh received 25 year terms after pleading guilty to conspiracy to obtain U.S. defense secrets and acting as Soviet agents. Judge Oren R. Lewis ordered consecutive sentences. charges were reduced from espionage. Johnson arrested at the Pentagon, Mintkenbaugh nabbed in Castro Valley.
In downtown Amarillo a man wearing overalls entered Haimes Drug Store with 11 cents and a bag of marbles asking for Prince Albert. He paid 11 cents for a Bull Durham tobacco and matches, leaving with his marbles.
