Old Sol smothered Amarillo with a 103 degree high tying a June 22 record. The heat sent residents to shade and sprinklers after a week of milder days. Forecasters expect possible showers and breezes, offering relief to people and livestock amid wilted pasture.
Paul May Belgian ambassador to the United States died at emergency hospital after gallstone surgery and a week with heat and illness. He had 39 years in diplomacy serving in the United States Japan England Turkey Mexico Sweden Finland and Brazil before becoming ambassador in December 1930. He is survived by his widow and three children.
The government designated 1 319 counties as drouth territory with 838 emergency and 481 secondary areas. New emergency counties include Major County Oklahoma and Texas counties Childress Clay Collin Colorado Cooke Foard Grayson Hall Hardeman Montague Wichita Wilbarger. Secondary Texas counties added are Bowie Cass Fannin Hunt Lamar Marion Morris Newton Red River and Sabine.
Lewis Cernoch, condemned by a Williamson County jury for the murder of H. L. Lindsey at Granger on February 15, has appealed to the Court of Criminal Appeals. Other appeals include Benton Layman for robbery with firearms, life. Ed Evans for murder, two years. and A. R. Benson for robbery, fifteen years.
Partly cloudy Tuesday across Amarillo and western Texas with little temperature change from yesterday. New Mexico remains fair with similar conditions. Temperature readings show highs near 70s and lows around 60s, with slight variations from yesterday.

About half a million dollars spent with only a spectrograph saved for examination at the University of Rochester.
Wheat futures reached the dollar level in Kansas City trading as adverse crop reports boosted demand. July, December, and May futures rose to or above $1 with gains of 1 to 1 1 2 cents. December closed just under $1. Top price reached $1 04 4. Corn futures also climbed with highs to 73 1 2 cents and car lots at 74 1 2 cents.
McAlester Oklahoma July 30 The state board of affairs upheld the right to perform vasectomy operations for sterilization of habitual criminals. Attorneys for the prisoner gave notice of appeal. If the district court rules against, the case will go to the state supreme court. George Winkler, a third term burglar, was the subject in todays hearing.
Mrs. Anna Roosevelt Dall, daughter of the president, obtained a divorce from Curtis B. Dall in a ten minute Nevada hearing before District Judge Clark J. Guild. The custody plan and property settlement were approved but terms were undisclosed. the case was conducted behind locked doors due to privacy concerns.
The state board of education today increased the per capita scholastic apportionment to 16.50 for 1934-35, signaling concern over dual support in public education. They reported a total $12 million drop in school expenditures over four years, with local units contributing about $31 million of $61 million in 1930-31 versus $20 million three years later. The meeting, at Bryan, was held on invitation of F L Henderson with full attendance.
The Pacific Coast longshoremen's strike ends with 12,006 ILA members set to resume duties at 8 A.M. tomorrow across the coast. Masters, mates and pilots and the Marine Engineers also notify mediation board of a return. Seamen and cooks remain on strike, with supervisors to watch hiring halls.
The 20 year old Bessie Mae Gillett was killed when struck by the eastbound Sunshine Special on Texas Pacific tracks about 10:10 AM. Her body was found after train crews reported blood on the engine and local identifications confirmed her identity.
A group of nine Texas inmates escaped the Harlem State prison farm 25 miles west of Houston by sawing through bars during a construction crew shift. A large posse searched underbrush with bloodhounds but no captures by day’s end. The escape followed another break at Huntsville on July 22 as authorities reviewed the widening manhunt.
East Prussia July 30 The illness of President Paul von Hindenburg brought a noted physician to his side yesterday was described today by the bookkeeper at his summer estate as not of an especially serious nature The president is suffering from old prostate disorders and an unexplained ailment of the feet after an alarm about his condition
The Texas Highway Commission awarded highway and bridge contracts totaling 1,440,779 dollars across 20 counties funded from state funds. Projects include 14 miles on Highway 15 from Rockledge to the county line, grading and drainage. 19 miles on Highway 28 from Floydada to Hale County line. bridge work on Canadian River Highway 117. seal coat on Highway 1. and concrete pavement on Highway 16 from Big Sandy to Gladewater.
Dr John R Brinkley the goat gland specialist will fly to Kansas City this week to launch his campaign for the Republican gubernatorial nomination. He arrived in Washington from Portland Maine and has run twice before for governor.

Victor Bodner, 24, refused to answer Police Judge Jay W. Harlan about details of the hanging in effigy in Danville Kentucky. Reporters Jack Durham and Wesley Carty returned to jail for the sixth time to maintain newspaper confidence. The placard with Rep. J Sterling Towles likeness was hung in the courthouse yard on July 19 to protest his vote for the state sales tax.
Box seats for the Tri State Horse Show to be held August 6 and 7 are expected to sell out before opening. Boxes hold six or eight and are priced at 50 cents each, with general admission also 50 cents. Office hours extend nightly until 1 am through the event.
