In the Panhandle region multiple cities engage in a growing argument over intercity boundaries and funding. Officials from several municipalities report disagreements over governance and shared services, with meetings scheduled to seek resolution and avoid escalation.
Fort Worth July 29 The Interstate Commerce Commission hearing opens with Denver opposing Rock Island Frisco and allied interests as three lines seek 264 miles of new track in East Panhandle and North Plains. Santa Fe backs Rock Island Frisco to block Denver from North Plains, while Denver wants 110 miles from Childress via Wellington and Shamrock to Pampa.
Partly cloudy to unsettled conditions across the region with showers and isolated thunderstorms west and central areas. Observations reference 7 am yesterday and show Amarillo reporting the day's high and a trace to 1 inch precipitation in the last 24 hours.
AUSTIN TEXAS July 29 Juan Flores once slated for execution for the murder of Manuel Fernandez in San Antonio received a gubernatorial commutation to life imprisonment Governor Moody delayed the death by reprieve for Flores while the state had argued he was present at the crime and the actual killer remained at large. Fernandez was stabbed during a robbery at his mother's store and the governor sought a full account of all facts before acting.
Wirt Franklin of Ardmore Oklahoma president of the Independent Petroleum Producers association will guest of honor as independent oil operators refiters and royalty owners in Amarillo meet in the Longhorn room of the Amarillo hotel at 12 15 noon The luncheon will discuss a proposed tariff on foreign oils and Franklin has a message of vital interest to every independent in the Panhandle area All interested in oil development should attend the luncheon today
Irvin W Cobb, new chairman of the Authors and Artists committee of the Association Against Prohibition, argues repeal or reinterpretation of the Volstead act. He likens prohibition to noble experiments like San Francisco’s fire and the Galveston flood and cites widespread violations and growing law evasion as consequences. He warns of corruption, bribery, graft, and other ills tied to prohibition.
Lancashire’s cotton industry nearly halted by a 12 percent wage cut enforcement. About 500,000 workers in 1,500 mills affected with $5,000,000 in wages at stake. Unions reject the reduction and vow defiance, though some believe the strike will be short despite open mills. Clarence S. Williams 28 is charged with murder in the knife attack that killed O. Hill Jr. 33, a Donley County farmer. Williams’ attorney said bond would be requested at 9 this morning. an examining trial may be held if the case is not declared bail able. Edw W Thomerson could not be reached for comment. Rutledge held on a Floyd County misdemeanor warrant. Williams, a former Fort Worth and Denver brakeman, ran a trucking line after leaving the railroad following a fall injuries. He is married with one child.
At Arnolds Park Iowa Lake Okoboji divers recovered five bodies from a nighttime collision of two pleasure boats. The Thriller sank in 90 feet off shore. four others, including Esther Rhengstrum and Lucille Adams, were still unaccounted for as rescuers pressed on and The Zipper was found afloat with passengers rescued.
Minneapolis July 20 Owen Haughland and co pilot Captain Preston L. Crichton die after the Miss Minneapolis crashes aloft for 154 hours 45 minutes. Crichton dies shortly after at Veterans Hospital Fort Snelling Haughland dies later from skull fractures and internal injuries.
American missionary Findley Andrews cites Chinese officials and magistrates in Dangar City, Chinghai Province, where Mohammedan raiders killed about 20,000 men and boys and looted homes during a two hour attack. The slaughter targeted males seventeen to seventy, with few women killed.
In a late report from Austin on July 29, 1930, two proposed constitutional amendments failed in the July 16 special election. They would have enlarged the Texas Supreme Court to nine members and raised the governor’s salary from 4000 to 10000 dollars annually. Keeling and Ferguson issued county returns showing both amendments trailing, with large gaps in support. Moody and Chief Justice Cureton faced a cautious outlook as the court prepared for its current vacation.
James M. White known as Uncle Jimmy, 90, pioneer of the Panhandle and Armstrong county, died at his home 602 Carolina Street. Born in Missouri, he moved to Texas at age 10, lived in Grayson county, then Claude, Amarillo since 1900. Survived by two sons and three daughters. body at Blackburn's Mortuary.
United Press reports at Auburn New York that machine guns atop prison walls halted the jailbreak at Auburn prison. Warden Edgar Jennings announced that all but four of 1,700 inmates were accounted for, with four men escaping. Troopers and guards secured the site as 400 state troopers National guardsmen and police monitored smoldering ruins. Two investigations were ordered to identify ringleaders.
B F Bouldin a 67 year old Portales Valley farmer killed his wife 60 and daughter 25 in a hotel room then attempted suicide. He bought a 41 caliber pistol at Wheelers hardware store earlier and purchased six cartridges at the counter. Inquest verdict labeled premeditated murder. He denied bond and awaits further proceedings.
In St Louis July 29 Dale Jackson and Forest OBrine pilots of the monoplane St Louis Robin near the 400 hour mark in a record endurance flight. At 8 17 p m they logged 397 hours aloft surpassing the Angeleno by 151 hours and earning $17 810 at $116 an hour since the record was broken.
