In Rome in 1961 a U SIA newsroom cheered as Shepard’s suborbital flight buoyed American spirits. Eight years later a New York letter notes Moscow’s Luna 15 setback and Eastern European doubt, signaling a sharp image reversal.
Rural nostalgia follows a letter from Ab Gunter once of Wheeler Texas now in Rui doso New Mexico carried by Lincoln County Centennial Pony Express from White Oaks to Lincoln dated July 26 1969. Community pride includes Ross Rogers Partnership golf title Carter Ellis team victory and Babe Ruth baseball triumph at Graham.
In Portales New Mexico ENMU hosts the first annual Southwestern Model Rocketry Conference as 60 young men compete after two days of talks. A computer guides optimum altitude for each rocket and judging includes flight accuracy parachute deployment and kit completion. Representatives from Centuri Engineering and Estes Industries address attendees amid audience questions.
The 61st Legislature reconvened for a 30 day special session to push a $307.50 million tax plan aimed largely at consumers. Gov. Preston Smith backs a sales tax rise from 3 to 3.42 percent and broader coverage to balance a two year budget. Rep. Ben Atwell proposes a rival plan to raise $360 million by lifting the sales tax to 4 percent and broadening it to personal services.
The government closed its fiscal year with a 3.1 billion dollar surplus, the Treasury Department and Budget Bureau said. It was the largest surplus since 1957 and far above prior estimates due to higher tax receipts.
The governor urged $900,000 in the budget for vocational technical training schools at Harlingen and Amarillo. Legislators worry the House bill lacks money for buying Amarillo AFB property. Rep. Walter Knapp backs the emphasis but says Amarillo and the Panhandle need funding for the AFB facilities. Lt. Gov. Barnes had promised Hazlewood and others before the session.
Clyde Durbin Jr. faces murder charges in the slayings of two University of Texas sweethearts. His attorney Frank Maloney floated insanity as a possible defense, prompting Durbin to react with firm denial as the trial opened in Travis County court.
Texas Agriculture Department plans to spend July and August TAP funds to promote turkeys, totaling about 14 000 state cash 86 000 in state labor and roughly 400 000 from the Texas Turkey Federation and turkey plants. Ben Baisdon says the total may approach 500 000 with free billboards and promotions by grocers. local cattlemen voiced concern about beef interests near McLean and the Panhandle region.
A neighborhood cat from 5210 Loyce has produced eight new kittens Sunday afternoon, bringing the total litter to 107 for the half Persian owned by Mr. and Mrs. Earl Smith. Mrs. Smith says only two kittens were taken to the animal shelter, noting Puff’s pretty offspring and the family’s constant supply.
Potter County commissioners approve a 2 a.m. closing hour for taverns and private clubs outside city limits effective Sept 1. The measure, authorized by the Texas Legislature for large cities, allows counties with smaller populations to opt in. City plans a similar action today.
Weather note reports Amarillo enjoying 188 days of sun this year with 12 days left in 1949. Forecast calls for fair skies and warmer temperatures today with highs in the upper 90s and light southerly winds under 10 mph.
President Nixon visited Thailand at the Chitral Palace amid monsoon rain, pledging U S backing for Bangkok if the crisis with Vietnam worsens. Attending a royal banquet, Nixon and Mrs. Nixon met King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit as crowds cheered despite weather. Separately an attack at Ubon air base wounded a guard and damaged two C47s, with no prior Secret Service knowledge of the incidents.
Pasadena based AP reports Mariner 6 closes in on Mars with its high powered television camera set to operate at 9 19 p m EDT from 771 500 miles away. First pictures expected on Earth about 24 hours later.
