A Navy divers training accident prompted a round the clock medical effort as doctors in a decompression chamber treated Arthur L. Appleton, 24, a machinist’s mate from Carbondale, Illinois, who collapsed during a routine 15 minute dive at 100 feet simulated depth. Lt Cmdr W A Wilson heads the diving school and said the ailment puzzled specialists as Appleton remained in serious condition. Reginald Shepard, a boatswain’s mate present at the tank, reported dizziness before Appleton was raised to the surface for treatment at the Naval gun factory facility. The deep sea dive tank uses pressures up to 300 feet.
The Amarillo city commission probe into grand jury charges of misconduct in the police department moves toward a final hearing today. Mayor Bud Curtis said one or two more witnesses may be heard before the record is transcribed and a decision studied. The two-month investigation has involved 80 to 100 hours of testimony from 25 witnesses including police, city workers, other enforcement officials, and private citizens.
A 15-year-old heiress Prudence Pratt, in a caustic dispute with her foster parents Henry and Patricia Platt of Evanston, was found in Chicago’s South Side slums escaping a police manhunt that began after she failed to return from an all night teen gathering. She admitted her identity at the police station after being recognized from photos and criticized her guardians, saying she did not want any part of them. She had given an uncertain initial tale of age and origin before confirming her status.
Senator Joseph R. McCarthy reported that Roy Cohn turned down an offer to serve as his personal consultant. McCarthy noted Cohn would remain available for help and advice and would be called upon frequently, while speaking to a cheering dinner audience in New York on July 28.
At the Hotel Astor in Times Square, about 2 000 guests gave McCarthy a two minute ovation while Cohn, who resigned as subcommittee chief counsel, was honored. More than 6 000 ticket requests were turned away at a $7 plate event with police security over threats.

An Air Force F-36B fighter crashed near Amarillo Air Force Base killing the pilot. The pilot’s identity was withheld pending next of kin notification. Warrant Officer Ted Hicks was injured trying to open the canopy as flames engulfed the wreckage. The aircraft, from Chanute AFB Illinois, was on a routine training transfer when the crash occurred at 3 45 p m. A preliminary investigation suggests fuel exhaustion on approach. An accident board was formed yesterday to complete the inquiry. Witnesses reported the pilot had continued on Page 2.
President Eisenhower wins final House passage on a sweeping tax revision expected to cut revenues by about 1.36 billion dollars in the current fiscal year. The 315 to 77 vote moves the measure toward Senate approval and a White House signature.
