The Favorite capsized during a squall in Lake Michigan injuring and drowning many aboard. By nightfall about 28 bodies had been recovered, many women and children, with searchers continuing efforts to rescue and identify victims.
The Associated Press reports names of identified victims from the Favorite disaster. Included are Fannie Holmes Berwyn. Clara and Ruth Young and others from Chicago area. ages range from 4 to 87. Several others reported missing or listed with relatives.
A boat with 75 to 80 passengers capsized a mile from the pier when a sudden squall drove passengers to one side. The craft listed and flipped as people tumbled into the water. Nearby vessels rushed to aid, rescuing men and women, with many clinging to lifebelts and debris as a negro band played nearby.
Amended forecast shows thundershowers for Amarillo and Vici with possible showers across West Texas. New Mexico remains with little change in temperature. The hourly outlook and yesterday’s figures are noted but incomplete in this excerpt.
Judge Newton P Willis of the 84th district court granted a change of venue from Hutchinson county to Gray county for the State against Ranger Jack DeGraffenreid charged with assault to murder in the shooting of Deputy Sheriff Bates. Trial date set for August 5, with defense continuance denied. More than a dozen state rangers attended, including Capt Tom Hickman. Coffee and Holmes represent DeGraffenreid.
Boston Billy Williams real name James Monahan pleaded guilty to burglary and larceny for raiding the Jesse Livermore home on Long Island. He was a second offender and is to serve 50 years in prison for the theft of 100000 dollars in jewelry.
Mrs. G. Kouba, 35, of Oklahoma City Oklahoma escaped injury when her car overturned after skidding on a gravel road at Palmer Lake Colorado. The vehicle was damaged beyond repair according to garage men.
Tulsa July 28 The Seminole oil flood to be halted by a tentative plan reducing field production from 515000 to 450000 barrels per day. A five member committee will direct Ray M. Collins acting for the Oklahoma Corporation Commission as umpire under a board of practical operators. If agreed by producers, the plan will go to the Oklahoma City Commission on August 6 for an enforcing order.
Ada Oklahoma July 28 United Press reports that arguments in the murder poisoning trial of Mrs. Josie Mack may go to the jury. Hazel Oglesby testified that a pie baked by Mrs. Mack was meant to poison Bert Mack, the husband, and the pie sickened all the family except Hazel. Odell Mack, seven, died.
John R. Miller former Borger mayor was cleared when a district court dismissed a bribery indictment alleging a $2000 payoff for mayoral favors. The court ruled the indictment defective as mayoral duties were not clearly defined. The West Texas Chamber of Commerce plans to aid Borger in seeking removal of Texas Rangers amid local tensions.
Cleveland July 28 The condition of Myron T Herrick United States ambassador to France confined in the Cleveland Clinic hospital after two operations was steadily improving Dr William E Lower reported He spent the night at the bed side and said Herrick had passed the worst stage of his illness and was on the way to complete recovery barring unforeseen complications
Paul Stanton sixteen was killed instantly and his brother Zachary twenty four seriously injured when a bolt of lightning struck them in a field ten miles northwest of Lubbock. A third brother eighteen was knocked down but unhurt as two other youths fared similarly. Doctors later fought to save Zachary's life. the family moved from Mount Vernon four years ago.
Charles Birger, condemned for the murder of West City mayor Joe Adams, made a last open court appeal denying he led the Birger gang and accusing former lieutenant Art Newman of framing him. Judge Miller urged cooperation with authorities as Birger faces October 15 hanging and possible appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court.
Five inmates escaped from the Pampa jail annex around 8 p.m. after sawing the cage lock and picking the outer door, while deputies search the surrounding area. The escapees, all awaiting LeFora trial next week, include J. W. Patterson and several with charges of forgery and theft. Authorities believe they may have fled together by car, with one elderly inmate remaining asleep during the incident.
The widow of Alessandro Berardelli asks Governor Fuller to free Sacco and Vanzetti. Berardelli, killed in the 1920 South Braintree payroll robbery, was guarding the paymaster Frederick Parmenter when the armed hold up occurred.
George Gabour a Texarkana merchant was fatally or seriously injured in a crash in Austin when an oil truck struck him. His skull base fracture ruptured ear drum and severe bruising were reported with his condition described as critical for several days as his brothers from Texarkana stayed at his bedside.
After a prolonged meeting directors report unpaid debts of over 16 000 and 30 000 needed to open the 1927 fair. They appoint a committee to arrange a joint meeting with the City Development board and citizens to decide if the fair should be held and financed this year.
