The NEA warns the postwar teacher surplus will double by 1976 and annual overproduction could hit 100000 to 150000. Districts cut programs, and former industry workers seek teaching jobs, with college registries shifting from finding teachers to locating jobs. A line of thunderstorms swept Amarillo and surrounding areas, bringing lightning, heavy rain, and high winds. Power outages affected northwest Amarillo after a surge at Plains and Kirkland, with flooding and stalled vehicles in several intersections. Trails of damage included toppled trailer homes at Catalpa Villa and hail in Gruver and Liberal areas.
Canyon residents back creation of the South Randall County Hospital District by 688 to 479 and approve an $800,000 bond by 645 to 490 to fund a $1.6 million, 50 bed hospital replacing Neblett Memorial. Hospital funds hinge on Hill-Burton approval by July 31, with possible bond funds kept if not granted.
Apollo 15 astronauts manually triggered a one second engine burn by bypassing a faulty switch, clearing the way for lunar operations near Hadley Rille. Commander David Scott and James Irwin prepare for first look at the Hadley site as Worden remains in orbit aboard Endeavour. The 12 day mission aims for Hadley Rille landing Friday afternoon with a Pacific splashdown scheduled August 7.
Dr J F Dawson 52 of 3506 NE 24th was seriously injured when his car left eastbound I-40 at Jackson and struck the front porch at 1907 Van Buren. He was alone, possibly unconscious, with head and internal injuries. No other vehicles involved.
The preliminary hearing in the death of Amarillo businessman Morris B. McCartt was postponed indefinitely after James Taylor Webb 22-year-old KU graduate filed a motion for change of lawyers. Webb’s new attorney Lawrence Henry a former U S district attorney from Denver. a new judge must be appointed by the governor delaying the hearing to Aug 3 or later. Webb is charged with voluntary manslaughter for the July 10 downtown Vail incident following McCartt objecting to flowers from a planter.
West Texas State University will reinstate 100 work-study students this fall after Congress allocated 126,503 to the program. Cliff Baker says funding lets the program run nearly as before, with 80 percent of salaries paid by federal aid and 20 percent by employers. Baker and Milton Morris lobbied in Washington to adjust the rule that cut appropriations for schools with higher family incomes.
The Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway issued a freight embargo at 6 a.m. July 30 due to an impending strike by the United Transportation Union. Reports of a perishables embargo were denied by a Santa Fe spokesman. Kansas officials urged quick settlement as UTU rejected binding arbitration, saying court action is enough to exercise bargaining power.
