Testimony in the second trial of L A Scotty Bruce, accused of embezzling funds from Western Electric, is expected to be concluded by 10 a m today.
A report notes racial riots last week with calls for slaying police and judges. The Senate rejected a proposed financial disclosure rule Monday night and instead approved forming a commission to study preventing conflicts of interest among federal employees.
The two year old Randy Earl McKinney died at Northwest Texas Hospital from burns suffered when gasoline fumes near a water heater ignited the closet where four gallons of gasoline were stored. His eight month old brother Kenneth Edward McKinney is in critical condition. The mother received burns and was treated, while the fire caused smoke and water damage to the Perryton apartment. Funeral arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers of Perryton.
Two South American nations, voting against Cuba in a judgment on aggression toward Venezuela, are expected to cut relations with Fidel Castro by August. They will join Mexico and Uruguay in complying with the OAS mandate, while Mexico delays until Diaz Ordaz’s presidency begins and Uruguay remains divided in council leadership. Latin ministers scoff at Castro’s claim that the OAS is a U.S. "ministry of colonies."
At La Jolla Shores a 42-foot alligator paddled in waist high surf as women and children fled. A swimmer captured the gator by its tail and foot before it was identified as the owner’s. George A. Trelikes, 48, of San Diego, claimed the animal and was cited for having a dog or animal on the city beach.
The Senate junked the Rules Committee disclosure test and backed a Dirksen led 17 member commission study on congressional financial disclosures. Debate paused after partisan exchanges as GOP criticism of the Baker case escalated. Final action postponed to Tuesday.
Oklahoma City patrolman Mark H. Zelewski, 28, was shot and killed minutes after calling for help on his car radio during an attempt to question three Negro men suspected in an attempted burglary. The tragedy underscores a violent morning in the city.
Undercover detectives testified in New York that agitators at secret strategy meetings urged murder of government officials and violence. Detective Rivera quoted William Epton of the Progressive Labor Movement and Harlem Defense Council stating we must kill cops and judges. Detective Behr described talks of bloodshed and missiles and warnings to white sympathizers to stay away from Harlem. The remarks were given at a hearing on an injunction against Harlem demonstrations.
After three days of testimony Judge Larkin extended a stay against Harlem protests until today and said he would hear more testimony on the injunction request. Included in the stay are F Epton and Jesse Gray, head of the Community Council on Housing, both linked to demonstrations that preceded rioting. Rivera testified Ep ton warned that cops and judges would be killed at a July street rally. Behr said he gained trust of leaders and attended meetings including one in Central Plaza where the Harlem Solidarity Committee formed to support the community and arm themselves against police.
Governor Nelson A Rockefeller tours Rochester after two nights of rioting leaving four dead and hundreds injured. He calls extremism inexcusable and urges law and order while meeting with officials National Guard and state police. The city remains guarded as tensions ease and preparations for normalcy begin.
The United States plans to deploy about 9000 additional military personnel to South Viet Nam over the coming months, raising total American troops there to around 21000. The move follows Communist advances and comes as the U S maintains opposition to Laos talks ahead of a wider Geneva conference.
