Thousands gathered as a blaze tore through the Butts oil well in Kilgore Texas after an explosion near 10 PM. Five workers were at the site. hopes for survivors faded as the fire raged and rescuers battled the flames and crowd.
A four day blistering heat spell in the southwestern United States has killed 63 people. Temperatures reached 120 degrees in desert areas, with Imperial Valley reporting forty deaths and a 25 day average of 108. One third of the deceased were Mexicans or elderly, while coast cities felt oceanwater heat and forest fires expanded across the region.

The American Business Club will hold a picnic this evening at Jack Hall’s Ranch at 6 30. Members wives and friends are invited. Activities include swimming dancing and picnicking with a baseball game earlier in the evening. The meeting replaces the regular Friday noon session.
On the White River Reservation in Arizona police seek leads in the stabbing death of 23 year old Columbia University anthropology student Henrietta Schmerler found in a ravine near a cemetery. Authorities say seven Apache suspects and a white man were released after arrests as inquiries continue.

The No. 1 Jones oil well of the Dana Oil & Gas Co. and Jim Cloud, Inc. near Dumas in Moore County continues burning after a Sunday fire during cleanout. Amy Johnson, Britain's leading woman aviator, left Lympne airfield at 1:30 PM bound for Berlin on a path to Tokyo via Berlin, Moscow and Siberia. She flies a plane similar to the one used in the Australia solo flight last year. This is her second attempt after a forced landing in Poland last winter. She was accompanied by J. Humphreys.
T L Stone of Austin, rural supervisor of the department of education, will visit Amarillo on August 13 to meet with Potter County rural school trustees. The announcement came from Miss Laura V Hamner, county school superintendent.
A mother and her 15 year old daughter were buried side by side in Llano cemetery after a gasoline explosion at their home. Mrs Albert Ecker 44 and Mildred Ecker 15 died within hours of the blaze as the mother sacrificed her life trying to save her child. Funeral services drew more than 2000 mourners at Tabernacle Baptist Church with a large funeral cortege to the cemetery.
The Lindberghs departed New York for a vacation flight to Japan and China. Colonel Lindbergh discussed with the state department and officials about conditions in the Orient before planning a stop in North Haven, Maine to bid farewell to relatives. He anticipated flying home via a different route after the East Asia visit.
J Frank Norfleet, dubbed the boomerang sucker, met with United States Attorney Norman Dodge to recover about 26000 in property and 4300 in cash allegedly taken by a swindler who married a Fort Worth woman. The husband-to-be reportedly used narcotics to control her during their Chicago honeymoon. The swindler is said to have operated on five other women under the name George C Adams.

Police and county officials close to charging possibilities in the case of Bill Elston 25 consecutive hours after he was shot while fleeing arrest at Jack Hall's ranch. Two Amarillo traffic patrolmen deny involvement as a 15 year old girl’s complaint swirls around the warrant. The bullet is now identified as a .44 caliber special Smith and Wesson revolver, with Elston hospitalized in critical condition and doctors expressing little hope for recovery.
In North Waco, 60 year old W E Harrison fired at a cat in his yard and accidentally killed himself. The coroner's inquest returned the verdict. Harrison left a widow, three sons, three brothers and three sisters.
In Greenville Texas W G Airhart who was gored by a bull yesterday suffered a broken shoulder and bad bruises but doctors said today he will recover.
