In Our Town, Joe Padilla Jr., 22, of 1202 E 11th, died in a one car turnover on an Interstate 40 access road Sunday morning. The fatality is Amarillo’s fifth traffic death of 1965.

Recovered by U S forces, the sergeant’s 20 month ordeal ended. he and four others had been captured when a Viet Cong battalion overran a camp near Hiep Hoa northwest of Saigon on November 24, 1963. He was found in reasonably good shape.
Saigon reports a United States Air Force FAC Phantom was shot down over North Viet Nam by a surface to air missile. If confirmed, it would mark the first U.S. plane downed by a ground missile in the Vietnam War. The incident occurred while supporting 12 F105s attacking a Lang Chi explosives plant near Hanoi. Nearby, a 23 year old Amarillo man Joe Padilla Jr died in a separate Interstate 40 crash in Amarillo. Police say the car was traveling fast, skid marks show. Saigon notes five SAM sites near Hanoi under construction.
New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller declares himself out of the 1968 presidential race at the 57th annual governors conference in Minneapolis.
