President Truman signed the new price control act with reluctance and warned Congress he may call a special session to strengthen it or raise taxes if adequate. The act reimposes ceilings on most goods while major foods stay exempt, prompting Amarillo grocers to predict mixed effects on over the counter prices.
Senator Barkley of Kentucky announced at 4 40 P M that the President has signed the OPA bill. Canned goods gains noted while some items may drop with future directives. Prices are influenced by subsidy suspensions and labor costs. The President urged cooperation in the inflation fight and warned of possible special session to strengthen price controls.
Washington July 25 P OPA proclaims immediate restoration of June 30 rent ceilings in 520 areas under federal control. Ivan D. Carson says the act supersedes state and local controls since July 1 and reestablishes eviction limits. Landlords charging above ceilings face federal prosecutions but refunds for excess payments are not required, tenants should revert to former rents.
In the Texas primary countdown candidates press last minutes of outreach. Governor hopefuls Homer P Rainey Jerry Sadler and John Lee Smith plan radio broadcasts and city rallies from Fort Worth Houston Dallas and Austin as polls near opening. Rainey addresses audiences after moving from San Antonio to Austin with a 9 pm radio show while Smith campaigns from Fort Worth and Houston asserting a race framed as Communism versus Americanism.
Phillips and Humble announce a 25 cent per barrel price hike effective Thursday morning, with Panhandle crude rising 28 cents and Stratton 30 cents while Seeligson and Tij ernia Canales crudes gain 20 cents. The new schedule sets Panhandle top grade at 1.60 dollars per barrel for 40 degree gravity or higher, with lower gravity reduced per degree.
The House approved a reform bill by 229 to 61 to raise salaries and pensions, cut committees from 48 to 19 in the House and 33 to 15 in the Senate, and set a $12 500 annual pay with a $2 500 tax free expense fund retained. The measure moves to a House-Senate conference. The Senate had proposed $15,000 pay and an $8,000 administrative assistant, which the House did not adopt.
Conference delegates pressd the issue of atomic weapons insisting military personnel must stay out of key decisions. They warn against triggering a broader arms struggle and urge civilian control over nuclear policy.
A Senate House conference committee reached agreement on domestic control of atomic energy. The plan keeps all five members of the control board as civilians and grants a government monopoly on atomic patents. The agreement allows casings for weapons to be made by the military if the President decides.
London reports Minister of Food John Strachey announced a four year agreement for Britain to buy 600 million bushels of Canadian wheat starting August 1. The pact spans four years and aims to secure staple grain supplies for the United Kingdom.
Rep May of Kentucky, 71, suffered a heart attack delaying his appearance before the Mead War Investigating Committee. Doctors said his condition remains serious and could keep him bedridden for several days. The committee may hold executive session to decide on calling May’s physician or designating its own medical examiner.
The Amarillo Horse Show opens at 8 15 p m at the Tri State Fair Grounds with leading stables from nine states and about 70 horses in 14 events including Lady Louise in program eleven. Proceeds benefit the Crippled Children's Council of Amarillo and tickets are 150 for adults and 75 cents for children.
