Beaumont July 25 Chief of Police Reid Levis leads a dozen detectives in a murder inquiry into Dr C A Penman found hacked to death in his room at 10 30 am. A Boy Scout axe was used and robbery is not the motive. Penman mother in law Mrs Lettie Lanier reports the doctor slept late and wife Mrs Penman is away on vacation.
Abilene and Buffalo Gap join to urge the Texas Technological College be placed in Taylor County. Delegations toured Lake Abilene, heard claims at Buffalo Gap, and highlighted water supply, gas access, railroads, and four nearby transit lines as factors in Abilene’s favor. The locating board continued its tour toward Cisco the next day.
A plan to merge the Methodist Episcopal Church north and south, split since 1845, won approval from the joint commission on unification in Cleveland. The plan, after minor changes, will be referred to both branches’ general and annual conferences for ratification.
SOMERSET July 25 AP report says L H Sheehan 36 and his wife were arrested in a hotel with about $1000 worth of narcotics. Police say he intended to deliver the drugs to Somerset residents. The case ties to a March “dope scandal” alleging large scale drug traffic in the area. Sheehan, previously an inspector in El Paso, was briefly transferred there before returning to Kentucky.
Police pursue a Albuquerque case involving a 12 year old boy abducted from a street on Tuesday. Investigators believe the missing boy is Howard Allen and blame a divorced wife of W Allen who reported the disappearance. The same man and wife reportedly abducted a daughter previously. A warrant charging abduction was sworn out.
Capt W C Reid attorney for the Santa Fe railroad says tonnage does not justify the Colorado Columbus and Mexican railroad plan to build the Columbus to Azote line crossing near Grants He favors the Gallup to Farmington segment if financed honestly and accuses demonstrative stock and resources claims of being exaggerated Several residents from Deming Columbus and Aztec testified on the line's need.
Amarillo and vicinity Thursday will be partly cloudy with similar conditions across West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. An atmospheric disturbance over the Rocky Mountain slope brings showers and warmer spells in the southwest, while a second low off the Middle Atlantic States causes light rain elsewhere.
The Rev. Father Walter A. Grace former pastor of the Shrine at St Anne near Denver was found guilty by a federal court jury of forging Sister Germaine’s name on a government whiskey shipment permit. The penalty ranges from one to five years and a fine up to $10,000. Grace faces an additional conspiracy indictment with Katherine OConner and John R. Walsh.
Amarillo logged 97 degrees at 4 PM, the hottest day of the year, with Texas and Oklahoma enduring two days of oppressive heat. Ardmore hit 109, Oklahoma City 105, Tulsa 100, Enid and Bartlesville 101, and Shawnee 104. No relief expected soon as the Weather Bureau forecasts generally fair conditions tomorrow and Friday.
Marshall reports 108 degrees at 3 p m making it the hottest day in two years. Temple records 108 degrees the hottest day there since 1917 when thermometers hit 108.8.
Wichita Falls reports a peak of 110 degrees after a cool spell of over ten days with readings under 100. In Corpus Christi the day topped at 91 degrees, dipping to 75 in the morning as a sea breeze from Corpus Christi Bay provided relief. The city’s record for the year stands at 93 degrees.
Beaumont reports 97 in the shade with a light breeze under 60 miles per hour. Local weather observer notes minimal wind as heat persists in the area today.
AUSTIN July 25 Numerous complaints charging conspiracy between oil refineries and pipeline companies in handling crude oil have been received by the chief supervisor of the oil and gas division of the state Railroad commission supervisor R B Walthall announced today Investigation of the officials are under way Walthall said The complaints have come from all of the principal oil fields of the state and involve some of these producing and refining companies
Senator Hiram Johnson of California urged the nation to stay out of the world court and the League of Nations at a New York dinner. He said foreign policy should be decided at the polls and noted his European talks since returning home. The event, hosted by Roosevelt supporters, sparked talk of a 1924 presidential bid.
Former Treasury secretary William G. McAdoo traveled from Santa Fe to Los Angeles after a day visiting Governor Hinkle and meeting New Mexico Democrats. He greeted Miguel Otero Sr and recalled a canal zone delegate supporting him, but said nothing about presidential plans while being hailed as the “next president” by supporters.
Austin July 25 The State Board of Education plans to reserve 1 500 000 of the school fund when it meets August 1 to apportion funds. The move aims to cover new book contracts if upheld as valid, allowing a 12 dollar per pupil apportionment, with 13 possible if old books are used. The action omits the injunction details pending final contracts adjudication.
San Angelo on July 25 reports that Boy Scouts in Tom Green County returned a $25 gift to Fort Concho Klan 306 of Texas after national headquarters guidance. The gift was not officially accepted. A letter from New York advised against the organization secret gifts and urged adherence to the twelfth Scout Law reverence.
Mario James, held in Fort Worth County jail, faces returning to the Kansas State penitentiary to complete a burglary sentence after violating deportation terms. Kansas authorities earlier offered freedom if he voluntarily left for Mexico. he complied, then returned to the United States, was imprisoned, and later found in Dallas after again entering the country.
In Springfield Illinois on July 26 a sheriff and deputies captured a man who set fire to wheat shocks in a north Springfield field. The arsonist identified as James Jackson of Arkansas carried a numeral 1786 on his overalls and threatened women and children with a large razor before escape attempts. He is suspected as one of Chester hospital for the criminal insane escapees.
In Hoboken the battle between the International Longshoremen's Association and the I W W Marine Transport Workers division continued with both sides claiming victory. I L A vice president John Aryan said the strike was settled and members would return, while I W W officials denied any settlement and warned of broad mobilization in Greater New York. A mass meeting in Brooklyn was called for next Saturday to vote on a strike.
In Dallas forty-two persons were injured and two fatally in motor car accidents from early Sunday evening to four this afternoon. Emergency-driver Sam Heyman announced the toll after checking emergency hospital records. Police chief Louis Brown ordered patrolmen to arrest all drivers involved in traffic accidents following reports only three or four arrests had been made.
President Harding arrived at Duncan B C at 10 o clock today aboard the Henderson. One destroyer anchored off Cape Mudge and another cruised off South Valdez Island while the president and Mrs Harding remained on board. Numerous boats went to Duncan Bay to visit the transport.
