President Johnson and GOP candidate Barry Goldwater conferred for 16 minutes in the White House on Friday to discuss election issues likely to surface during campaigning. The Senate moved to police itself by creating a bipartisan panel with power to recommend discipline for senators found guilty of wrongdoing. A massive four day fire raging in California crossed US 66 and kept burning out of control through heavy brush.
Dick Gregory addressed the American Newspaper Guild in Long Beach urging equal employment for Negroes in the industry and predicting more civil rights workers will be murdered that summer. Delegates adopted a Human Rights report and attacked press critics while denouncing cannibalism in newspaper mergers.
Pearl Coleman of the Herring Hotel died in Northwest Texas Hospital after being struck on the 800 block of Pierce around 5 p.m. Friday. G. B. Duran of 1509 E.ith faced police, witnesses said she darted into traffic, and he did not see her until impact. She died at 1:35 p.m. after sustaining a possible head injury.
A Plainview Tex man Ernest Lee Doyal 39 was killed when he ran to help a woman at a Bonita grocery store mistaking an escaped youth for the assailant The incident occurred as the youth forced the store workers to leave with him Investigating officers say Doyal was shot accidentally by the store owner Jimmy Dubois who believed he was confronting the youth. Dubois is held on a 2nd degree murder charge on bond. Funeral arrangements are announced by Lemons Funeral Home in Plainview.
Massachusetts Ballot Law Commission ruled off the ballot the name of Leonard E Tagg 14 of North Weymouth who sought a state House of Representatives seat Secretary of State Kevin H White protested the candidacy and action.

President Johnson announced a new RS71 jet for worldwide reconnaissance traveling faster than 2000 miles per hour and flying above 80000 feet. The $1 billion program began in February 1963 with first flight testing slated for early 1965. Officials say SAC will receive aircraft soon after.
The Senate appropriations committee recommends a defense bill totaling 106.7 billion dollars for the current fiscal year. The amount exceeds the House total by 315 million but remains 696 million below President Johnson's request and about 1.5 billion under last year's Congress funding. The measure, a major portion of federal outlays, faces floor action next week with net gains from added spending offset by cuts to emergency research.
An Amarillo city employee barbecue plans to feed about 4100 people at Thompson Park starting at 5 pm. 4500 pounds of beef 300 pounds of beans 50 gallons of apricots 40 gallons of barbecue sauce and assorted condiments are prepared. The event honors former police chief John Snider with pit operations led by Captain Frank McDowell and Fire Chief Jim Henley.
