Citizens protest Washington Street widening from 49 to 65 feet to clear space for concrete islands on a three way traffic plan. They note 57 trees along Ellwood Park likely spared while many others would fall for Interstate 40 through residential areas.
R E Bruse, Ailis-Chalmers chief, questions Walter Winchell’s report that J Edgar Hoover may resign Oct 1. Bruse recalls Hoover as his former boss and says Hoover’s stance on Communism clashes with Bobby Kennedy, while Hoover disputes the charge.

The protest followed a day of business including second readings of ordinances and a water field project for Amarillo.
Col. Jack W. Hayes Jr., commander of the 22nd Aerospace Division, makes his first official visit to the 4128th Strategic Wing since its joining the division. Hayes, a Tucson native and 1940 pilot, flew 27 WWII missions in B 17s earning the Silver Star and Distinguished Flying Cross and later shot down a German MB-262. He previously led the 310th Aerospace Wing.
The $4.672 billion foreign aid bill, preserving presidential discretion, is sent to the White House after House passage by 221 to 162. It includes $600 million for the Alliance for Progress and sets yearly limits for Latin America, with other authorizations for development and military aid.

Secretary of State Dean Rusk and Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko held a three hour meeting in Geneva but produced no sign of change on the Berlin issue. A fourth meeting may be decided Wednesday. Rumors persist of a separate peace treaty with East Germany to control West Berlin supply routes. Gromyko said the talks included a German peace treaty while Rusk reaffirmed U.S. vital interests.
A sultry afternoon cloudburst pattern covered the South Plains and Texas Panhandle with torrential rains. Farmers near Olton and Clarendon report four inch plus totals while Amarillo saw only a trace as a cool front moved in. The weather pushed month and annual moisture figures toward record levels.
Measured rainfall from Sunday leaves 68 acres of cotton wiped out on Sullivan's farm 12 miles southeast of Clarendon. Huggins area reports heavy rain washing out a bridge on Farm Road 1260 and flooding nearby farms. A second cloudburst near Olton drenched farms with four to five inches of rain and light hail, destroying 300 to 356 acres.
