County commissioners hospital planning committee and board of managers gave final approval for a mid-September contract on a 1.5 million dollar expansion at Northwest Texas Hospital. The plan adds a five story medical unit, remodels, a separate power plant, a northeast laundry, and a south wing for student nurses quarters, with funding matched by federal aid. Completion targets about a year after award. future eight-story support possible. County bond issue funds plus accrued interest cover part of costs.
North Korean forces thrust into Yongdong and swept west along the coast, seizing rail and highway corridors in southwestern Korea. US First Cavalry Division reportedly holds its ground 20 miles south of Taejon as Far East Air Force destroys tanks and trucks. Reds reach Haenam and Namwon after rapid advance from Kwangju.
Sgt First Class Harvey N. Bailey, son of James P. Bailey of Borger Texas, listed as missing in action in the Defense Department Korean casualty list. The report notes North Korean advances around Kwangju Namwon and Yongdong with US rear units under pressure as battles continue near Taejon Yongdong.

Seven injured in a two-car crash near Pampa Sunday afternoon left eight swimmers returning from Lefors pool and ten bound for the pool. Janice Isbell 18 and Mildred Jones 16, both of Pampa, were killed instantly. Mary Jo Harris 17 of Hoover died in a Pampa hospital. Critical patients include Melba Jo Harris 27 Brinkman L Dean Begert 16 Pampa and J W Clark 29 Skellytown. Harris and Clark remained unconscious with multiple injuries. Additional patients are John Dawes 17 Pampa C L Harris 40 Brink.
A two car crash at the Highways 87 and 54 intersection near Abernathy left C. E. Turner of Bowie dead and James Moore of Tucson in critical condition with skull fracture and crushed chest. Turner drove west on 54 while Moore went north on 87. Turner, 70, was en route to Hale Center to rent a house. he leaves a son Roy Turner of Amarillo and a Hale Center grandson.
Hervey Herbert Howell, 20, an aircraft assembler at Convair, was fatally injured in a car truck crash early today in Fort Worth. The incident occurred as authorities investigated the wreck.
