Negro Democrats Hold Convention in Houston South
In Houston on July 24 a group of black voters organized a Democratic precinct convention and elected delegates to the Harris County convention. Precinct 25, led by E. H. Harrison, claimed as the first such Black-led precinct convention in the South, with 3 white and 50 to 60 Black attendees. A white woman, Lottie Wallis, was named precinct election judge and cast the precinct's one vote at the county convention. The precinct reported its highest primary turnout ever with 400 votes, 100 percent pro Roosevelt, and urged electors at the Dallas state convention to back the party’s nominees in the electoral college.
