Potter County voters head to the polls today in a high stakes election season marked by intense campaigns. Candidates drive hard, rallies and speeches fill Panharie towns, with long voting lines anticipated as Weather cooperates.
In Kankakee Illinois a 7 year old witness described how his partially paralyzed uncle Ronald Ashline 26 forced the boy to pull the trigger of a shotgun placed under the man's head The witness Lewis Messick summering with Ashline was the sole observer Neighbors recall Ashline's past injuries from a 6 year old automobile accident.
Curtis Douglass of Panhandle charged Senator Clint Small and the Amarillo Globe-News with intimidation and fear as he closed his campaign with a large open air rally at Ninth Avenue and Taylor Street. He claimed a plan to mislead Panhandle voters and criticized Small campaign manager Binford Arney as the opposition’s crown prince. He cited support from Henry Schafer and warned oil lands were ignored by the inner circle.
Roosevelt orders postmasters removed from political influence affecting nearly 1,000 offices. Postal records indicate about 300 more appointments will still be made under the old system where a congressman or local party committee selects from the top civil service qualifiers.
Gustav Beran of Chicago postponed his turtle soup party after a violent incident at his home. He fired at Myrtle a 20 pound turtle, injuring himself when the bullet struck his foot after Myrtle withdrew. Neighbors visited him at the hospital.

Onlooker quipped Daugess did not cheer but switched to Rotler’s speaker so Butler could finish.
In the 1934 Texas gubernatorial primary scene Gov James V Allred campaigned for re election urging the largest vote in state history. Opponents attacked his handling of the old age pension law arguing it limited benefits to the needy while the law intended universal pensions for those over 60 or 65. They proposed new taxes and levies to fund pensions. Allred said he followed the law.
Hyman Gorewitz is acquitted of an assault charge after Judge Daniel S. O'Brien finds testimony by two mothers insufficient. The witnesses claimed he set wolf traps to catch neighbor children and baited them with shin ing discs to attract youngsters.
Senator Clint C. Small defended his legislative record at a large open air rally on the Amarillo Municipal Auditorium grounds. He attacked Curtis Douglass backed by Henry Schafer and warned voters to compare records to choose who can do the most good. Continuous denunciations of opponents and claims of ethical breaches marked the event with further remarks from regional industry representatives.
Asheveville NC July 24 Sheriff Brown announced Prof W L Clevenger of North Carolina State College was detained for investigation in the slaying of his niece Helen Clevenger. He arrived from Ohio after the funeral and was held at 3 PM. The sheriff said a confession may not come for a week or 10 days and declined to name the suspect. He called reporters at 7 05 PM to his office.
Tacoma diary notes a farmer T Sasaki harvesting a garden carrot uncovers a gold chain and a $30 nugget from the soil. He suspects the chain and nugget were lost by a harvest helper about five decades ago.
Robert S. James is found guilty of drowning his seventh wife Mary with a bathtub death tied to a rattlesnake torture mainly to collect life insurance. Jury of 10 men and two women deliberated about nine hours. death sentence mandatory as no life imprisonment recommendation. Prosecution claims motive and details of the August 4 incident.
An editorial urges voters to support John W Hawkins for state land commissioner noting his 30 years as first assistant and his reputation for honesty integrity and fair dealing The Daily News endorses promotion of Hawkins to the office for Amarillo and the Panhandle readers.
Rebels attacked Madrid but were repulsed by government forces forming a steel semicircle in the Guadarrama. Government radio reported heavy losses for Fascist columns and growing royal control as rebels retreat toward Seville and other rebel strongholds.
The State department established direct telephone contact with Ambassador Claude G. Bowers in Fuenterra bia Spain and was assured by him that he was all right.
The capital received reports of a surrender as Fascist forces in the north retreat after heavy fighting in mountain passes near Soma Sierra Segonia and Avila. Loyal troops including army regulars civil guards and civilian militia repelled rebels as they attempted to reach the capital.
Political observers across the state expect Judge F. W. Fischer of Tyler to reach the runoff in the Texas gubernatorial race with Gov. James V. Allred. Backers including Coke Stevenson Lee Simmons and Jim Marlow say Fischer’s prospects are favorable after a Houston campaign close with a statewide radio hookup.
In Bertrand Missouri on July 24 robbers drilled a nitroglycerin charge and blew the safe lock, but took only five dollars and fled. Officers said the safe door had been unlocked all along.
At a Stonewall County ranch five people were threatened by Sam Cyrus a 24 year old Negro. He knocked down a boy and locked others in an ice house before turning on Mrs. J D Patterson Jr striking her with a rifle butt and stomping her. Cyrus shot himself as officers arrived and the mob was held back. Mrs Patterson was hospitalized in Stamford in serious though not immediate danger.
George Andrew McMahon was arraigned at Bow Street court on charges under the Treason Act of 1842 and possession of firearms for an attack on King Edward. Prosecutor Sir Donald Somervell said McMahon claimed he could have shot the king and only threw the revolver. A barmaid will testify about McMahon’s remark the day before.

Potter County Democratic Party chairman C. C. Gibson warns that providing free transportation to voters violates Texas election laws. An election judge may reject a ballot if they know a voter was brought to polling places improperly. Gibson asks Potter County candidates to observe the rule.
Polls open at 8 A M and close at 7 P M as Amarillo area voters choose between Clint C Small and Curtis Douglass for state senator from the 31st District. Contests include Robert Underwood Jr vs Henry Bishop for district attorney and Sheriff W M Adama vs W M McGough. Banks closed and beer parlors stay shut from one hour before polls open to one hour after closing. Weatherman predicts fair weather for a large turnout. County Democratic Chairman G Gibson says election readiness is complete.
July 24 report says Dr. W B Von Brunow, Pampa's oldest physician, was critically injured in a car crash near town while returning from a fishing trip. Charles Hitchens of Carshad New Mexico sustained lesser injuries.
The Globe News election party begins at 7 pm with loud speaker broadcasts of results. Sixth Avenue between Taylor and Fillmore Streets will be roped off for live updates and readers will see four editions at 8 30 pm 9 30 pm 11 pm and about 2 30 am. Four leased wires and regional telephone lines will provide returns though no calls for results are needed. Forty staff members will tabulate and broadcast results as received.
