Boyd O Wopet a hairy man found living in a tree house and cave in the Trinity River bottoms was detained by county jail officials after farmers reported him. He said he once worked as a Kansas farmer and wished to return there. He allowed a haircut and bath but refused to trim his long beard. Continued on Page 11 Col 5.
President Roosevelt rejects exempting corporate gifts to charities in a shifting tax bill fight. Welfare groups warn the stance could recall “horse and buggy days” of private charity. House Ways and Means Democrats hint at possible rift with the President over graduated corporate income taxes. Committee members refuse to discuss actions after Chairman Doughton calls certain aides “traitors.”
Senator King of Utah said he would introduce a resolution asking the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to investigate whether the United States should sever diplomatic relations with Germany. He cited Hitler's oppression of Jews and Catholics and Germany’s failure to meet obligations to the United States.
Federal troops with machine guns took over Matamoros Tamaulipas as agrarian rebels demanded city officials resign. Mayor Rafael Munguia said rebels disbanded and retreated to farms after a 3 PM deadline. A few rebels remained near the outskirts but no further trouble was expected.
Representative Dempsey of New Mexico announces a bill to let farmers in the middle Rio Grande Conservancy District obtain federal farm loans. He notes current law blocks loans due to a water obligation of about 35 dollars per acre on their lands.
The Hunsley Paint Manufacturing Corporation will begin operations around August 5 in Amarillo. The 1701 West Seventh Avenue plant features a large modern facility with a chemical laboratory for developing paint formulas and a railroad siding for material deliveries. Initial employment includes seven or eight workers with four skilled paint experts and their families relocating to the city.
United States authorities moved to remove federal inmates from Lubbock Texas jail denouncing its lax safety standards. Two prisoners were transferred and officials said removals occur about 25 to 30 times yearly until reforms meet federal standards.
The Texas Railroad Commission issued an order limiting gas used to lift a barrel of oil in the Panhandle to 10 00 cubic feet. Gordon Griffin said this marks the first absolute limit on gas for lifting oil in the Panhandle, with some wells using up to 100 000 cubic feet per barrel. The rule takes effect August 1 and allows higher use only when gas is processed for natural gasoline or burned in carbon black or repressure.
District Director A A Meredith outlined Works Progress Administration plans for Panhandle projects to about 200 county officials from 20 counties in District 16. Attendees received detailed plans and expected many applications to be filed locally, then sent to San Antonio for final funding approval. Norris Ewing from the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce pledged support.
Four district judges ruled the citys parkometer system legal authorizing charges for parking on city streets. The decision affirms Oklahoma City efforts to manage curb space and revenue through meters.
Dallas police hunted a small time gambler for questioning in the Lorius Heberer disappearance case. Detective Captain Fritz said the man is not a suspect in the deaths but may hold information aiding the May 22 missing persons inquiry involving Mr. and Mrs. George Lorius of East St Louis and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Heberer of Duquoin.
A Wichita Falls bound bus collided with a cow on a highway near Dallas. Driver Lou Smith said he could not see the animal in time to avoid the crash. Passenger Harry Finley of Altus Oklahoma was hospitalized with bruises. six other passengers were shaken but uninjured.
Governor Allred received the resignation of H O Jones of Winters from the Texas House. A special election will fill the vacancy on August 24. The district includes Coke, Runnels and Concho counties.
Delegates from three states in Raton New Mexico meet to plan paving gaps on the Colorado-to-Gulf Highway and promote tourist traffic. Amarillo chosen as next convention site. Allen Wikoff elected president succeeding McCarty. Texas New Mexico and Colorado officials outline rapid paving plans and a 150‑strong attendance.
Scattered thundershowers lingered in the Central Panhandle yesterday afternoon bringing moisture. Amarillo saw up to a quarter inch while downtown measured only a hundredth. Kingsmill and Panhandle towns reported varied amounts including a quarter inch to about an inch in places. Bovina recorded a quarter inch.
Two cars of the Union Pacific Streamline City of Portland on the Chicago to Portland route derailed late today in Nugget Canyon between Kemmerer and Cokeville Wyoming. No injuries were reported.
Approval of the Conchas Dam project and $4 500 000 for initial construction heralds major development for Panhandle and Eastern New Mexico. The dam, 230 feet high and 26 000 feet long, will impound a 16 mile long lake and support flood control irrigation and recreation. About 30 months of construction will employ hundreds. a 30 inch pipeline will convey water to Amarillo. Plans were by U S Army engineers. New Mexico senators Hatch and Chavez and Rep Dempsey praised local support in a telegram to Amarillo Chamber of Commerce.

Rep Dies of Texas proposes a Roosevelt backed plan to form a three member committee to study deporting unemployed aliens and to authorize up to 100 million dollars for their expenses. He cites French and other nations moving aliens to Paraguay and says the measure could remove thousands of unemployed or undesirables. The proposal notes over 1,000,000 aliens on relief and seeks international negotiation through the State and Labor departments.
