The American consul reports an auto flying the U S flag was fired upon and set ablaze on Barcelona outskirts. At least one occupant was killed. The report came as word reached Washington of unrest involving rebels in northern Spain and four Spanish clerks in an Barcelona office.
Washington reports the Madrid engagement north of the city where government forces were defeated and retreated in disorder. Embassy officials say more than 100 Americans sought refuge, and Third Secretary Eric C. Wendelin described efforts to move all U.S. personnel into the embassy for safety.
The American consulate general left yesterday in a car bearing the American flag to transport Ford Motor Company Barcelona head George Jenkins from the city outskirts. A British chauffeur drove the consulate vehicle. Consul Lynn Franklin at Barcelona said clerk Santiago Iturralde had not returned or contacted the consulate, raising a possible link to the automobile involved in a shooting incident. Typhoon lashes North Korea and Okinawa coast during fleet drills sinking ships and killing several as I 55 and a navy service craft go ashore. Dozens of houses destroyed and about 16 fishermen reported missing with up to nineteen deaths feared.
Wink Texas July 23 Vic Wright a 43 year old oil well driller died from burns received when a well came in unexpectedly soaking his clothing with oil. Relatives said the body would be sent to Minersville Ohio for burial.
An open letter of apology by Father Charles E. Coughlin will be published in Social Justice tomorrow on the papers second page. He says his July 16 Cleveland remark calling President Roosevelt a liar was not personal but a protest of his record since 1933 and offers a sincere apology to the President.

In Santa Maria California July 23 a Navy aircraft rammed into a park near the county fair after Lt W Oliver refused to abandon his ship and steered it away from crowds. Co pilot Paul Gresky perished when the parachute failed to deploy as the plane fell.
A coast guard plane sighted a life raft on the east side of Key Largo. Coast guardsmen moved by automobile toward the area to determine if the raft came from the sunken or missing British motorship Nu noca.
Candidates mount last appeals in the Panhandle with Curtis Douglass speaking at 8 pm in Panhandle on Ninth Avenue and Taylor Street while Clint Smail closes at the Municipal Auditorium with a two hour program. The 142nd Infantry Band, Mayor Ross D. Rogers presiding, and KGNC radio air the events.

In Butte Montana Sen James Murray led the Democratic nomination race with about 39 872 votes against 31 345 for Rep Joseph B Monaghen based on 850 of 1 237 precincts. The contest focuses on the Montana US Senate primary.
Four persons were killed and at least 15 injured in a head on collision between two Central of Georgia passenger trains near Ogeechee Georgia. Officials report 15 taken to Millen hospital. Mrs Randolph Cooper wife of the state agent said no one was seriously hurt.
