Jimmy Foxx famed baseball hall of fame slugger died Friday at his brother’s Miami home. Sheriff detective Walter Seward said the death appeared from natural causes. The report notes Foxx’s long career and status as a baseball immortality icon.
More than 2,500 spectators watched Susan Bagwell of Claude crowned Farm Bureau Queen Friday at the Caprock Roundup and Pioneer Reunion in Claude. Danny Burns of Pittsburg named state president and Inman B White Jr., 15, of Palestine won the public speaking contest. The convention closed at noon.
Former Amarillo mayor F W Wallace, longtime secretary of Shamrock Oil & Gas Corp, will become executive director of the Amarillo Area Foundation. His $10 000 annual salary starts immediately. Wallace retires from Shamrock January 1 after 36 years.
Miss Willie Lou Meredith 22 sister of civil rights figure James Meredith was found dead hanging by a plastic clothes line from a gas pipe in a Milwaukee apartment basement. An uncle identified her and the Medical Examiner cited prior physician care but gave no cause.
U S Marines drove inland and routed two North Vietnamese battalions 15 miles south of the DMZ along Highway 1. The clash near the Street Without Joy left about 240 Communists dead, with no American casualties reported. Navy pilots shot down three MIGs over North Vietnam with a possible fourth.
Washington AP reports about 9,000 GE large screen color television consoles and table models from 1966 67 urged to disconnect immediately amid possible X ray emission. GE identified tubes F4 and 6LC6 as leaking radiation. Surgeon General Stewart warned of potential health hazard and advised notifying GE.
