In the Panhandle region local Democratic chairs express cautious optimism about the Kennedy–Johnson ticket in November. Three more principals join the March legislative crime probe. Potter County Grand Jury indicts G. R. Bufkin and two others, including a Amarillo attorney, on felony charges.
Chicago reports that GOP leaders discussed uniting Vice President Richard Nixon and New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller as a Democratic rival ticket. Sen Thruston Morton said platform talks could draw them together, while Nixon kept doors open and Hatfield was named as a possible presidential nominee.
The United Nations Security Council unanimously urged Belgium to hasten its troop withdrawal from the Congo amid Soviet threats to intervene. The vote, after two days of tense talks, followed a U N plan to deploy a UN force to support Congo's government.
Secretary of State Christian A. Herter brands Soviet threats to Congo as a reckless bluff. He says U S counter moves respond to provocative notes while UN efforts seek to restore order in the Congo. He acknowledges no new hard line just measured replies to Moscow.

Lightning sparked hundreds of fires roared through vast western areas from Mexico to Canada and from the Pacific to the Rockies. Officials declared Los Angeles County a disaster area as 41 000 acres burn near the city and Hearst Castle area. Cecil Smith, 30, died near Downieville during a tree collapse. Fire crews battled across seven states with more than 2000 sheriff deputies aiding evacuations.
In Texas League action San Antonio beat Amarillo 1 to 0 and Tulsa edged Rio Grande Valley 6 to 2 in 11 innings. Victoria dominated Austin 15 to 2 while another Texas tilt ended 3 to 2. In the National League Pittsburgh defeated Los Angeles 4 to 1 while Chicago beat Cincinnati and St. Louis won 9 to 4 over Milwaukee. Philadelphia topped San Francisco 3 to 0. In the American League Detroit won 9 to 0 over Washington with all games completed.
A San Francisco family mission to endure primitive subsistence for six weeks ended after 12 days due to malnutrition and dysentery. Har vie (Bud) Boyd quit July 10 as his wife and three children grew weak, while rival Examiner reported the Boyd camp abandoned in the Trinity Alps, 250 miles north of the city.
Reading shows Amarillo had sun for 183 of 203 days in 1960. At 3 PM Thursday wind speeds ranged from 5 to 15 MPH with skies described as fair in Amarillo and cloudy in Oklahoma City.
A reader letter from Wellington, Dr E Scott, faults the FTC for upset over retailers inflating list prices to offer large discounts. He cites a neighbor who could not afford a $100 watch at full price but buys it for $19.95 and urges Congress to target ads that misrepresent taxes as temporary.
Southern leaders pressed the GOP to write a moderate civil rights plank for the 1960 platform. A drafting committee was to meet Friday to craft language acceptable to both North and South while urging understanding over new federal law. The platform committee would report after its Saturday session as six southern states urged moderation.
