A boy named Roger Gue confessed to playing with two babies in a hospital crib and running away before returning. the scene was witnessed by parents, a detective, and reporters. Prosecutor McLaughlin warned the murder case remains open as parents doubt the confession.
The House Un American Activities Committee heard that Communists are backing a Wallace led third party. Walter S. Steele testified about the Progressive Citizens of America and ownership records of The New Republic. He linked Kenny headed fronts and a Wallace for President campaign.
Sheriff's description lists Vernon Hill Gathright Binkley Leo James and Don Davis as four inmates who escaped Carson County jail Sunday. A fifth person drove the getaway car toward Borger while guards and townsfolk described the attempted lock manipulation with a tin-key and dinner fork.

ALBUQUERQUE July 21 Disposal of the Bell Ranch, once 470000 acres in northeast New Mexico, is complete with contracts for the last 100000 acres. Albert K. Mitchell announced the buyers are George L. Simms of Panhandle and John L. Hill of Amarillo who paid 420000 for 65000 acres, and Jessie E. Chappell of New London Conn and Lubbock for 217000 for 35000 acres. Mitchell noted the ranch was first purchased by him and two associates last August and has since been sold in parcels. He will retain his own ranch holdings at Albert.

Three B 29s arrived at Giebelstadt Germany to test 25 000 pound Samson and Amazon bombs on an underground submarine factory at Farge. Some scientists speculate on underground atomic shock waves triggering wider destruction.
AUSTIN July 21 Begins daylong hearing before the State Board of Pardons and Paroles on Dr. W. R. Newton of Cameron seeking a full pardon. The Cameron physician contends innocence while supporters claim 35,000 letters and 0 petitions demand mercy despite a prior verdict. A opposing side led by Meade F. Griffin insists Newton should serve his two year sentence for assault to murder.
President Truman urged shifting wages and prices to avert an economic downturn and sustain growth. He warned adjustments must come before unemployment rises, citing temporary props such as reconversion demands, saving and credit use, and a surplus of exports over imports. He called for social legislation and restoration of wartime controls.
Indianapolis, July 21. First degree murder charges filed against Katherine Franklin 47 mother of 10. She said she drenched husband Philip Franklin 47 with gasoline after a quarrel milking a blaze that turned him into a human torch and gutted the house.
In San Antonio on July 21, District Attorney William Hensley announced a full scale investigation into Rick Messier a 26 year old combat veteran serving a year in jail for stealing two rabbits. He said he may seek a new trial or dismissal if a mistake is found. The American Legion plans to intercede with the Board of Pardons and Paroles. Messier a veteran of the 75th Infantry Division took part in five European battles and earned the bronze star. Judge Charles J Matthews sentenced him to one year in county jail after a guilty plea at county court at law No 2.
In Minot North Dakota a major fire destroyed two oil stations three creameries a grocery store a cafe a grain elevator and a bottling company after a bulk plant explosion. Two people Chester Weston 22 and William Foster died and five others were seriously burned as fire crews fought to keep the blaze contained before a south wind.
Twin sisters living in the same Brooklyn house gave birth to their first children on Saturday. Both deliveries were attended by the same doctor who delivered them 33 years earlier, Dr. Henry Aronson. He reported both mothers and babies did very nicely.
Locomotive engineers strike against the Southern Pacific began at 8 oclock CST with a union spokesman predicting a settlement tonight after a day of talks. About 3,500 engineers and 25,000 other SP workers could idle 8600 miles of track from Oregon to Texas as trains halted in multiple cities.
Indonesian radio reports Dutch forces launched a major amphibious assault on East Java capturing Probolinggo Sitobondo and Banjoewangi while Dutch land forces from Bandung claimed to have occupied most of the Soekaboemi-Changur area in West Java. The House approved a 290 to 112 anti poll tax bill to bar states from requiring poll taxes for voting in federal elections. Supporters aim to move the measure to the Senate in 1948 despite expected filibusters.
