Manpower expert M. M. Boring told the Senate Armed Services Committee that only 3.2 percent of American high school students study physics. He criticized public education as soft and urged a strengthening of fundamentals to address a growing shortage of engineers and scientists amid global scientific competition.
The Texas Association for the Improvement of Reading sponsors a four day conference at West Texas State in Canyon next week. Kay L. Ware in charge of reading clinics for St. Louis public schools will discuss causes of reading disability adjusting reading programs to individual differences and teaching spelling. She also addresses the reading teacher and public relations amid the Why Johnny Can t Read controversy now on NYT best seller list.

Patrick Eugene McDermott, 56, fugitive and ex-convict linked to the 1926 ambush killing of Canton Daily News publisher Don R. Mellett, is identified by a New York policeman. McDermott, once hidden under the alias Steve Garish, faced extradition in Ohio where life term awaits.

The House and Senate agreed to raise the national minimum wage from 75 cents to $1 an hour, overriding Eisenhower’s preference for 90 cents. The date is set for March 1, with a conference to resolve Jan. 1 vs March timing.

North All-Stars defeated the South 13 to 6 in a West Texas New Mexico regional game. The American League games showed Chicago and New York tied at six with Boston, Kansas City zero. Baltimore six Detroit three. Washington six Cleveland four. National League results included Brooklyn 10 Chicago 3. St Louis nine New York two. Philadelphia six four. Cincinnati two zero.
A fight broke out during a House Education and Labor Committee debate over adding an anti segregation amendment to a school aid bill. Reps. Adam Clayton Powell and Cleveland M. Bailey exchanged blows as chairs were bumped and both sides were restrained by colleagues. Bailey later denied the incident. Powell said they are old friends.
Otis Rollins Woodring 30, Snyder, Oklahoma, withdrew innocence and pleaded guilty to the May 11 bank holdup of First National Bank of Hooker. He received a minimum 30 year term at McAlester. A 100‑member Texas panel had been summoned for July 28 to try him. Most of $17,000 was recovered after a roadblock near Dodge City, Kansas. Woodring has prior felony sentences in Kansas and Arkansas. He avoided a jury trial, while on bail. He had attempted wrist-slashing and was linked to a jail break attempt.
