Secretary of State Dean Rusk told reporters in Washington that Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces are hurting very badly. He noted U S plans to continue bombing North Vietnam and warned Hanoi must be ready to talk peace before an end to the war is possible. Piedmont Airlines Flight 22 a Boeing 727 from Atlanta to Washington collided with a twin engine Cessna owned by Lanse Air Inc at about 2000 feet. Seventy three passengers and five crew were aboard the jetliner with 81 dead including three on the smaller plane. The Pentagon said Navy Secretary-designate accompanied by his wife and son were on the jet. Eyewitnesses described bodies scattering across highways and homes as the jet dived after the collision near Hendersonville North Carolina.
Weather Bureau expects more rain across the state as West Texas reports extreme totals. Elbert farmer J. E. Keeter records 11.4 inches near Throckmorton County and notes wind damage to cotton terraces. Other towns log multiple inches while Highway 79 remains flooded but passable.
A Hereford man William Isaac Allen 49 and Amarillo woman Wanda White Brooks 34 died late Wednesday when their car was torn under the rear of a semi truck at 5800 block of East Amarillo Boulevard. The truck driver S S Spencer 26 and his wife Sharon plus their 3 month old baby were hospitalized. An eye witness, David Rumbeck 19, described the crash as the car sliding under the trailer as the truck turned onto the eastbound lane. Fire units guarded a possible butane tank rupture. The two victims were Amarillo's fourth and fifth street deaths this year.
Imperial California two California Highway Patrol officers were shot as they questioned a stolen truck suspect early Wednesday. Patrolman Frank A Story died from a neck wound while partner Patrolman Ernest H Goff was wounded in the chest. suspect Robert Martinez was captured and jailed on murder suspicion.
America launches Explorer 35 on a last chance mission to study radiation hazards for moon missions. NASA's Dr. John F. Clark reports all systems normal as the Delta rocket carries the 230 pound craft to a 225,608 mile voyage toward lunar orbit with a possible two to three year mission.
A Saigon communique reports dogfights between U S F4C Phantom jets and eight MIG17s. Hanoi claims a U S helicopter was shot down during a rescue. U S headquarters did not confirm aircraft losses.
