Police have intensified enforcement by reactivating minor traffic code items. Officers carry rulers to check curb distance and monitor left turns, alley entries, road lights, double parking, and jaywalking. Radar unit downed briefly. now back on patrol with possible street checks tomorrow.
Mrs. Joe Callaway of Little Rock Arkansas thanks Amarillo for aiding in locating her lost dog Chang a red Pekinese during a Fourth of July visit. Forgetful Fanny Crespi is elected mayor on May 27 but forgets to take the oath within 30 days. Citizens voted again and she traveled to Novara to take the oath before a government official, securing a second chance as mayor.
The Senate defeated the Hells Canyon Dam bill by 51 to 41 after a bitter fight between Democratic leadership and Republicans. Eight Southern Democrats joined 43 Republicans to block federal authorization for a 485 million dollar dam on the Snake River. Only Wiley of Wisconsin and Langer of North Dakota voted for the bill.
The House rejects a move to strike the enacting clause from the civil rights bill and defeats efforts to limit the measure to an investigating commission. A teller vote of 140 to 91 defeats Rep. Miller’s claim the bill is dangerous, while an amendment to add sex discrimination proceeds 115 to 83 as Southern Democrats and some women reps push to broaden the inquiry scope.
Hailstones six to seven inches deep covered a three mile area around the Hampton Gin after a hail rain and wind storm at 6 30 p m. Betty Hodges reports six inches of hail along the highway six miles west of Littlefield while rain totals reached two to three inches in 30 minutes. Local damage included blown mailboxes and flooded ditches as crops were beaten down.

Two armed bandits robbed Hatcher's Drug in Amarillo after 10 p.m. taking cash checks and 92 in Mexican pesos. Scott Hatcher and his wife Ruby were bound. she freed herself and helped free her husband. They fled in the station wagon.
Governor candidate Price Daniel urged a plan to reduce highway deaths through youth education law enforcement and planning. He proposed a high school driver education program and called for Legislature action. Other candidates planned rallies and media appearances across Texas.
