The paper recalls 1945 Soviet allied leaders in smiling rows, compares then and now, notes the iron curtain’s holes, and warns that treaties may fade. It cites Eisenhower and aides at Geneva, seeking deals with firm guarantees, stressing cautious diplomacy and prepared resistance.
Tom Boardman from Cleveland urged Amarillo and Texas to keep imagination and ingenuity alive. He warned against defensive thinking and barnacle growth on communities and urged bold action to turn dreams into reality. He cited Texan persistence and urged continued ambition.
Forty years ago folks boiled coffee settled it with an egg and red flannels marked the era. Neighbors cared about each other families shared evening dress and preachers earned Amen from the crowd. People valued honest work and a man’s word, while Rip Van Winkle slept twenty years without endorsements.
In Amarillo this fall two local high schools will have their football games broadcast by separate radio stations. Congressman Rogers notes in his weekly newsletter about a foundling home raffle in Washington where Edgar H. Dixon of Dixon-Yates bought a ticket for a Mercury car, drawn the day the Dixon-Yates contract was cancelled. Dixon won the car.
Katherine Ann Haynes, a 28-year-old postal clerk, cross-examined witnesses and persuaded a coroner's jury that the early morning shooting of 19-year-old Nancy Penton was accidental. The jury acquitted the alleged crime by finding no intentional homicide.
In Houston on July 19 a 60 year old driver Fred Raemer halted at a red light when a two tone 1955 hardtop car dropped 40 feet from a garage roof onto his car. The driver Elvin Steen and a mechanic were on the roof when the vehicle sped off smashing a brick wall and looping into the air. Raemer said he had no time to jump and merely held his breath as the car landed.
Washington July 19 The Senate Appropriations Committee voted to restore 565.6 million of the 627.9 million cut by the House from Eisenhower's foreign aid bill. The panel's action leaves 3.204 billion for aid in the new fiscal year, higher than the House and lower than the President's request. The bill advances to the Senate floor Thursday with hopes of preserving most restorations.
Borger July 19 Special George W Finger was reappointed director of the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority at the Borger city commission meeting. Finger’s new term begins August 1. The panel accepted a low bid from J L Gober Co for seal coating on Weatherly and Fifth streets. An ordinance was introduced after a hearing with Southwestern Bell’s A O Thomas and Al.
A Roberts County grand jury that indicted two cattle traders on charges of fraudulent disposal of mortgaged cattle asked Judge Lewis M. Goodrich and District Attorney Bill Waters to dismiss the indictments. The jurors reconvened to reconsider all evidence after reviewing testimony from 18 witnesses including bankers, defendants, cattlemen, an attorney, and a Texas Ranger. The judge will defer judgment, study proceedings, and consult jury foreman Grady Bailey before deciding.
A Shamrock Oil and Gas Corp plane will fly to Austin to pick up Salk polio vaccine for the second inoculation of area youngsters. Davis of the Potter County Foundation for Infantile Paralysis said vaccines will serve Potter and 13 other counties, with only 70 percent of first-shot allotment available for the second round. County reps can collect at Amarillo Health Dept before 5 p.m. today or 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on other days. arrival is expected about 4 p.m. Members of the Potter County Medical Society will administer the second shot with parental consent.

Amarillo city commissioners study possible moves as Canadian River Municipal Water Authority prepares a bond election to finance a private financed project. Authority directors discussed plans despite Amarillo opposition to call the election on August 8 in the 11 member cities. City attorney Ben Manning to research legality of a bond election before contract elections and whether to retire to call an election on the water purchase contract with the authority.
The report notes 183 sunny days in Amarillo during 1955 and provides a 3 pm yesterday reading from Houston and Dallas showing cloudy conditions. Wind speeds range around 12 to 15 mph with visibility listed as miles.
President Eisenhower pledged the United States would not attack Russia and urged a unified Germany with the West. Soviet Premier Bulganin rejected German unification with the Western alliance, leaving the Big Four deadlocked on Germany's future. The summit center on NATO aims and security, with cautious Western optimism for limited progress.
Hard rains drenched a wide West Texas stretch then moved into the South Plains and Panhandle Tuesday night. Up to 11 inches fell, flooding streets, washing into homes, and evacuating about 33 families by boat in Lamesa and southeast of Tahoka. The downpours revived hopes for a money crop and freshened ranges while a main bridge was wrecked and a fatal highway crash blamed on the flooding.
The Trans-Pecos region 40 miles northwest of Del Rio saw 13 feet of flood waters surge over it while South Plains rains turned cotton patches into lakes. Lakes ran over but no major flood expected on the Pecos, Devil's River or flatlands. Detours arose between Del Rio and Alpine due to bridge closures as cars stalled on rain-washed highways.
