FBI agents arrested twelve men before dawn Tuesday accusing them of conspiring to block racial integration in two North Carolina counties. The sweep targets a coordinated effort to maintain segregation across county borders.
Sel Munhall plans a sentimental double observance touring the Old Course at St Andrews to play the Road Hole before coal sheds are removed for a hotel and to sail the Queen Mary one last time. A fatal crash near Elida, eastern New Mexico, left eight dead and several injured. Linda Boyd, 23, a Clovis mother of three, died when her motorcycle hit a car on U S 606. Motorcycle rider Eugene Servantius is in critical condition. Other vehicle operators involved were Mack Cofer and a following car. Funeral plans were to be announced.
FBI agents arrested 12 North Carolina men in Rowan and Cabarrus Counties on charges of conspiring to hinder racial school integration. James Wayne Davis was among those arrested. The group allegedly engaged in shootings dynamiting and arson against schools and churches as part of the plot.
Mayor J Ernest Stroud attempted to cut a 23 percent hike for Pioneer Natural Gas Co by half with an ordinance raising the BTU standard to 1000 per 1000 cubic feet The 2 to 2 tie left the plan stalled as Commissioners Mays and Beverley opposed and Gibson supported the measure
Emmett Ray McCarthy, a 6 foot 10 inch inmate, was captured by Oklahoma Highway Patrol at a roadblock southwest of Ada seven hours after fleeing Pontotoc County jail. He was found in the trunk of Jack Timmons’s car along with a makeshift knife. Troopers said a hostage night involved Timmons’s family and the escape plan aimed at reaching Dallas where his stepmother was ill. Dist. Atty. Melson planned additional charges of escape and kidnapping.
NBC chief Julian Goodman urged Congress to abolish the equal time requirement in the Communications Act or suspend it during the 1968 campaign. He argued the rule hinders informing the public and penalizes candidates as FCC enforcement of the fairness doctrine continues.
