About 225 inmates at Nevada State Prison refused to move from the main yard seeking to air grievances before Gov. Charles Russell. Warden Art Bernard dismissed the claims as unfounded while a committee presented a nine point list demanding personal parole-board meetings, better meals, more work, and other prison-management changes.
Amarillo School Board tentatively approved a 1955 56 budget of 394279 for Amarillo Junior College District with six of seven members present. The amount marked a 35021 increase over the prior year while valuations of 272 million were projected for the tax base with a 92 percent collection assumption.
Italy’s Chamber of Deputies backs Premier Antonio Segni in a 293 to 265 vote, with 50 abstentions. Segni vows to listen to all parties while warning leftists to obey laws, as the coalition seeks Senate approval the next day.
The Canadian River Municipal Water Authority directors met in Plainview to set an Aug. 8 date for an area wide revenue bond election on a private financing plan for a $76 million dam. Ten member cities voted yes, Amarillo opposed, Pampa absent. If Amarillo withdraws by Aug. 8, Amarillo voters may be excluded. otherwise the Authority calls the election.
American industrialist Howard Hughes sells RKO Studio and assets to General Tire and Rubber Co for 25 million dollars in cash. The deal, announced after secret talks with Thomas J. ONeill, gives General Tire control of 400 to 600 old films and potential TV movie production, described as possibly the largest cash sale in American cinema. The contract is signed, with payment due July 25.
The Senate passed a bill authorizing free polio vaccine for children up to age 20 and pregnant women in states and communities requesting it. Sen. Morse was the sole vote against, citing the measure as insufficient to address a national problem. Sen. Welker joined in noting alleged health authority cover-ups but did not vote. The plan would have the federal government buy the vaccine and distribute it to states for local distribution.
A Brady port dress shop operator testified that former land commissioner Bascom Giles had her falsely notarize Veterans Land Board applications at the urging of Brady land promoter B. R. Sheffield. The state seeks to prove Giles stole 6800 dollars from the Rosenow Ranch sale funds, with bank deposits and warrants tying Sheffield to the transactions.
Texas Ranger Clarence Nordyke died in a highway crash about 40 miles west of San Angelo. The veteran officer, former Callahan County sheriff, was returning to Ozona when his car struck a bridge in a rainstorm at 7 15 a.m. near Mertzen, overturned, and he was alone. He had served with the Rangers since 1942.
The first atomic electricity for commercial use flowed into the Niagara Mohawk system in West Milton New York as Chairman Lewis L Strauss of the AEC pressed a switch. A prototype reactor powered a 10 000 kilowatt turbine at the Seawolf project. Strauss touted atomic power as feasible and cited the Nautilus as proof. GE president Ralph J Cordiner hailed the moment and Schenectady proclaimed atomic power day with WGY broadcasting the event. Niagara Mohawk will market the power under an AEC arrangement and three nearby public power agencies face a three month window to decide on transmission.
In the West Texas New Mexico League Albuquerque defeated Amarillo 5 to 4 while Clovis beat Lubbock 26 to 11 and Plainview topped Abilene 8 to 2. El Paso prevailed 5 to 4 over Pampa. In the National League Cincinnati won 9 to 5 over Brooklyn and New York defeated Milwaukee 6 to 5 with Philadelphia 8 to 2 Chicago 6 to 1 completing a suspended game. American League results include Baltimore 3 Chicago 0 and Washington 6 Kansas City 3.
